Hey guys,

I have a friend at work who has a 2000 Toyota Camry, and it allegedly needs a catalytic converter. She has it at a local repair place, and they are telling here that she needs a Toyota cat to the tune of $1500 for the part alone. Why would this thing need a Toyota cat,and not an aftermarket one? She has a check engine light on,and she has been told it is due to needing a cat. Does that sound right? For the record it is an LE model with the 4 cylinder, and automatic. I have no idea how many miles it has,but I would guess it is over 100k. Any help would be appreciated.

Could be cat.... O2 sensor is more likely on the motor in that car.

There's no reason for it to need a "Toyota" cat.

I did some looking on Advance auto parts website, and they show a direct fit cat,but it says not approved for california OBDII converters. I wonder if this applies to cars sold in MA as well? I ask because a lot of the same emissions standards in CA are followed in MA.

That i don't know.... i do know that earlier models of that car had only one cat, unless it was in california then it had two.

Don't know about the laws, but there is no reason for it to have a Toyota cat. My wife has a 4 cyl Camry and we replaced the cat with an aftermarket unit to the tune of $150 with no problems two years on.

Be sure to ask for the old cat back when/if replaced. These things have a very high scrap value due to the metals used inside

Check the emissions tag under the hood. It will say either "complies to all federal emissions standards," or "complies to all CA emissions standards." or something to that degree.

I know NY dealers sell ALLOT of CA emissions equipped cars even though it is not required by law.

If it is a CA emissions yota the stock replacement from the aftermarket world probably will not fit without some modification. However, it is up to the MA law if you can modify it and put a norm 3-way on. I know in NY you can remove CA crap as long as you put on FED stuff on and it passes. If MA law requires all CA equipment, you will probably have to bite the bullet and go with the $$cat.
