Hello hivemind. im sure someone out there has seen this, or had it happen to them.
car is an 06 Odyssey, EXL RES. power everything, all but touring option. has 140k on it, but this issue has been here since 117000 when we bought it last year.
ill try to describe it as best i can, but its an odd thing. when driving really casually, like 10-15% throttle or less, accelerating and a mild pace, right at 45-50 mph, when it shifts into 5th gear, it has a shudder. its fast paced, about 5-7 beats per second, for lack of batter way to describe it. now, if you accelerate a bit harder, say 25% throttle, it doesnt shift to 5th until 53-55 ish, and it doesnt do it. if you hold the shudder at 45mph, it will stay till about 55, then disappear.
lately it has gooten a bit stronger, but the speeds and conditions havent changed. usually now i just leave it in D3 when under 50MPH, and that takes care of it. i guess i was wondering if there was a TSB for a reflash that keeps 4th longer, or something like that, or if theres something amiss in my voodoo box (trans).
Thanks in advance!

The Saturn Vue of '04-'07 shares the same Honda Engine and trans.
I have a Vue with a 4 cyl manual but on Saturn Forums I read often of the same "shudder".
Sample: http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=198138
The solution seems to be trans fluid changes every 25k mile with the good stuff ($$).
If you can not document when the trans fluid has ever been changed then the Vue owners recommend the triple refill.
The tans does not completely drain, only about 50% drains so...
First refill and you have 50% new fluid, drive a little.
Drain and refill so as to now have about 75% new fluid, drive a little.
Drain and refill so as to now have about 90% new fluid.
These guys are adamant that this trans should not be flushed.

You have the VCM (variable cylinder management), which also includes an active rear engine mount. There is also a re-program available for the transmission. Motor mounts are another common issue to watch out for, my front motor mount was shot when I replaced the front and rear mounts a few weeks ago. A vibration on acceleration might point to an issue with a drive axle.

oh yeah, service records, forgot about that.
Replaced since bought: CV axles, Wheel bearings, Strut mounts, belts, plugs, tires, brakes, and a bunch of aggravating door actuator crap...
and the issue was there before and after all of that.

i read through all that you posted, and it seems the motor mount is the most likely culprit. can i ignore it for now (until spring), or will this lead to terminal failure of something pricey? i just bought a house and i don't need to drop $400 in my van if i can let it slide.

If it's a subtle thing, I'm also wondering if it's the ACM kicking in (out). I've noticed this with our 2012 Ody since we got it. However, I only notice when not associated with a shift ie cruising along at 40-50 and you start up just enough of a rise to require a few more cylinders to keep the bus moving.
Given what JohnRW mentioned, doing a few iterations of dump/fill with some RedLine ATF would be an easy first step though.
Honda is pretty crazy about recommending only their ATF. As much as I love Redline and other quality synthetics, I've stuck to OEM fluid (ATF-Z1 originally, but that was superceded by ATF-DW1) in ours. I do the 3X drain/fill thing about every 30k.
You could probably stretch it until spring with the motor mount if you could live with the vibration. I'd run it by that forum, though, there are some knowledgeable people on there who may be able to give you better info than I can.
There are non-OEM versions of the mounts out there, but after a bunch of reading I went OEM when I replaced our non Active Cylinder Management front/rear mounts. With the more complex active system, I'd only consider OEM. Unfortunately, that makes for an expensive rear motor mount.
its very subtle, and isnt getting substantially worse. i think ill leave it be for now.

We had the same shudder show up on our 2005 Odyssey. Ours was cured by the dealer with the latest PCM flash. We were afraid a new transmission was on the menu.
Torque converters, reflash and mounts are all common with the Honda trans. Mounts are pretty common though. The longer you wait, the more mounts you'll replace. As one weakens, it stresses the others until they fail. We see this a lot on the MDX.
In reply to jmthunderbirdturbo:
My '04 CR-V did the EXACT same thing. Do the trans fluid flush per Honda using Honda trans fluid. It eliminated it in my car.
There's a flash that takes care of it, torque converter lockup parameter.
I would make sure you get that before you dive into the mounts. They suck to replace and with the cylinder deactivation they're $$$$.
It does sound like a TC lockup.
Clutches can cause a shudder. Just ask Ford on their Power Shift.
ill contact my local honda dealer. thanks.
