I've changed the transmission oil in a MINI, so I know that is not true.

I stand corrected. IIRC he said it was a sealed unit and that the dealer didn't work on them. If you had a problem you ordered a new trans kind of like the Nissan CVTs.

Regardless he had gotten to the point that the car needed much more put into it that it was worth and it had less than 100k miles on it.

It does have a "lifetime" fluid (typical of BMWs) and if you want the OEM fluid one needs to sit down before hearing the price per quart.  Redline MTL is a common replacement, but needs to be changed a lot more often, so the actual cost difference is a bit of a wash.
