I bought a $1,700 1983 rabbit with a roll cage that is 95% race ready and it just needs some minor finishing. The cool part is that it came with a lot of good parts already installed and some good spare parts that are fairly rare/pricey. (I can document everything....I didn't initially buy this for the $2009 competition, it was just a good deal on something when everybody thought the economic sky was falling) Some of the spare/uninstalled parts:
Neuspeed control arm brace lower control arm brace
Eurosport stage 1 cylinder (already has a fresh rebuilt head)
front spoiler (already has one)
Autometer speedo and tach
Ground Control coilover set
Bilstein PSS9 front coilover struts (already had Bilstien sport with H&R springs)
Camber plates
modified front hubs and 100mm cv axles (Already has a good set of axles on the car)
I know by the rules I could sell these items and deduct them from the build price of the car (with in the rules limits) but some of the parts that I would not be using are worth keeping if I'm to keep the car long term. Would it be possible to use the fair market value for the parts and deduct them from the build/purchase price?
I'm not offically entered yet (too many things going on in life with having a new baby and all), but I've been kicking around the idea of competing for several years now. My main goal is to just finish the car that I purchased and enjoy it locally but if I can do that and compete at the $2009 session then why not.
Tell me what you think on my fair market price for parts I want to keep but not use on the $2009 car. Now my version of fair marrket is not crazy high ebay prices but that Eurospec head sold for $2,000 new back in 2003 and fair market for a good used one is probably at least $500 and I'd be satisfied with $300 towards the build price.
I still have $300 in which I can finish the car with and I probably will sell of the leftover suspension parts
