I was thinking about the earlier posts regarding the new rollbar / cage rules. I said earlier that I liked the fact that the old rules added to the challenge of choosing a car. I also like the idea that the new rules provide safety without a budget tradeoff!
My proposal would be that a convertable with a "free" cage should be limited in the drags to the time that it would have been allowed if it didn't have the cage. If an open car is capable of running faster than 13.99 and wants credit for the faster time, the cage would need to be counted "IN" the budget. This brings the advantages and dissadvantages of open or closed cars back into the decision process.
I've been meaning to ask if we can go back to having 5 autocross runs. There was plenty of time for 5 runs.
In $2008 my car put down a 3 good autocross times around 10:30 am that held until aboout 1pm. (When the Hongs woke up :)
Anyway, I still had 2 runs left, so I drug the car out again to see if the track got better. (And due to some urging from the announcer).
With only 4 runs this year, we put them all down back to back since the tires were warmed up. I like the idea of being able to come back later to defend your time. Oh and not knowing if someone has put down thier best time yet.
What about fuel lines and tanks? If they are rusted out can they be replaced with stock pieces as a safety item? What about replacing the stock tank with a fuel cell?
Nah, that's a pretty serious slippery slope. No more changes to the rules this year. They is what they is. Have fun! Per

Ditto. I've tried viewing the rules in three different browsers (IE6, IE8, Firefox...all with XP) and they are all wacky in all three browsers.

I've done a bit of racing. Without a claim rule this race series is a JOKE! "I just got a deal on a NASCAR racer for $1.00" and I want to compete. Oh, my rich uncle willed me his 427AC Cobra and I want to compete.
Come on guys get serious! Grassroots racing my fat A**! This is more like a Grassroots publicity STUNT.

Sounds terribly likely to me that you haven't actually taken the time to read the rules. And certainly haven't taken the time to check out any of the past entries.
Seconded to bamalama. Your face, IS in fact a publicity stunt.
PS: The 427 AC Cobra would get eaten alive.

Go away troll. The claim rule doesn't take into account the TON of man hours needed to make a car compete.
And the 1buck NASCAR car... wouldn't be valid within the rules... it wouldn't be a valid sale, nor is it fair market value.

1 shot wonder...joins the board today..flames and leaves..
come down in Oct and let's see what you got.
Jeez. Here we go again. Like that subject hasn't been beaten to death a zillion times.
hpinxs, whoop out that inherited Cobra and come on down.

Wow, I think that's really true. How about that.
I think a stock Miata with lots of Nitrous, really sticky tires, and a good alignment could probably crack the top 15 in the drags and autocross. It would get destroyed in the concours. I think that's about as close to a no work "ringer" as you can get for this contest.

I resemble that remark!!!

My entry made it to my house with a cracked windshield. It seems to me that the spirit of the rules would allow it's replacement, but, of course the letter doesn't...
The spirit of the rules has allowed several cars to run with cracked windshields, even though the letter of the rules does not allow it.
Part 1: How much work, parts swapping and setup can be done to the car between the dragstrip and autocross runs? This is assuming that the total never is greater than $2010.
Part 2: If dragstrip trim is $2010 and autocross trim is $2010, but the total for all parts is $2010+, you fail, right?
Part 3: Are you always planning on having a "professional" driver for the autocross portion?
Thanks -Brian

1: How good are you in a hotel parking lot? You have an entire afternoon/evening/night/morning to get whatever work/swapping done that you want.
2: Yes, the sum of all parts used must be <$2010; for example, if you have $100 worth of tires in the autocross and another $100 worth of tires in the drags, that's $200 in your budget.
3: I sure hope so! Note that you don't HAVE to use the "pro" but you can if you want. For those of us that suck at autocross, it was great to let the pros (who had been around the course about 100 times) take the wheel. If you were allowed more runs it would be a different story, but with only 4 runs there was little margin for error.

Thanks Bryce, that's exactly what I figured. I hadn't even realized that they were on different days.

(/tooting own horn) That's me on the right, we do OK in parking lots (/tooting own horn)
90 minutes to swap an Amazon engine....did you guys stop for lunch in the middle, or did you have to rebuild the other engine before installing it?
Bryce
When I finally get to one of these - I'll let you show me how to swap the engines on your car in under that. Of course, I mean the rear engine in the front and visa-versa.

Well, I have a 122 wagon in my driveway and a video camera. How much is a training lesson for the LeMons crew worth?
