Friend is selling one and I'm thinking of buying it since the price and timing is right and friend needs an easy sell.  It's a 2010 TDI with the automatic / DSG transmission and ~50k miles.  The CEL is already on (of course, it's a VW...).  I've been googling around for info but don't understand some of what I'm reading since I don't speak VW or TDI...

What are the problem spots on these?

What are the fixes?

Any special maintenance required or recommended for the DSG / auto trans?

Thanks!

No experience with a TDI but I have a couple years experience with the DSG.

1) The fluid change interval on the DSG is important. If it's the same on the TDI, it should be at 60k but, like most things, it doesn't hurt to do it a little early. I was planning it before I go rear-ended and I had done some research on it. You need about 6L of the fluid and it fills from the bottom. Should cost around $120 to do yourself on the cheap and only goes up from there.

2) If you haven't driven a DSG (or another dual clutch) it's worth doing a little reading to understand what it's doing. Mine made a lot more sense when I realized that I needed to understand what clues I was giving it as to my next gear change. Basically, using throttle dials up a higher gear while low throttle dials up a lower gear. Basically.

I've owned 3 TDI DSGs, an '09 Jetta, a '14 Sportwagen, and a '15 Golf.

Pretty sure DSG service is every 40K miles.  It's an automated manual, it's the best auto I've ever driven.  It will occasionally behave similar to a manual at times, quick rolling reverse into forward gear, and starting from a hill let off the clutch roll back slightly.

Find out what the code is.  I've got a Bentley manual still for the '09-'10 cars.  Only issue I had on the '09 was a cylinder pressure sensor, it's built into the glow plug, so a new glow plug fixed the problem.

They like most modern VWs require specific motor oil.

If it hasn't already been done, there are recalls that will extend the emissions warranty, so the DPF shouldn't be much of a concern.

There's some internet fear mongering about frequent HPFP failures on the first few years of the common rails, we put over 100K miles on our '09 before it was totaled, and had very few issues.  I suspect we'd still have it if a stupid woman hadn't side swiped us.

I read about the HPFP on the 2009-2010 cars.  Scary E36 M3.  My neighbor had to replace the camshaft b/c it was worn out and a bunch of other stupid stuff on his 2009 so I know the issues are real.

This car is definitely due for a full service.  It was owned by his elderly parents - the last of which recently passed.

Have a 2010 TDI Sportwagon with DSG and so far the only issue we've had is too many short trips clogging things up causing a CEL. It's my wife's car so after an Italian tune up and longer drive to let it run it's self cleaning procedure it has been fine. I like it a lot. Friend we bought it from put a nice tune on the engine and the DSG. 300+ torques and approximately 180hp scoots this wagon along pretty good.
