Going to a 5.0L with 412hp!

Read a little blurb about last night.

Hopefully its not going to balloon the weight up to the Camaro's or something.

Locost?

I read no change in weight for the Mustang.

The engine is all aluminum, except for the cylinder liners so weight could even be less. The basic car has not changed much. I hear there will be a new six as well,

This has been the current topic on the 'stang forums for a while. The 2011 looks to gain a few pounds from new options, but not much. The new motor (code named Coyote) makes a reported 415 hp, but there are no reported torque numbers. It's a 4-valve head, so some reports have torque peaking at high rpm with a little less on the low end. With a 6-spd manual, you'll lose a little more hp throughput to the rear wheels as well. High compression rations on it will also make forced induction more difficult.

It should be interesting to see how they really do on the street, but the mystique of the 5.0 nameplate is great. As many as they will sell, in a few years they should be great locost fodder.

this means I now have to supercharge my '05. oh darn.

Torque is 390lb*ft @ 4250rpm

The 5.0 coupe with manual transmission weighs 3603lbs.

You guys are behind, hahaha. This was all the buzz on the Mustang boards about two weeks ago.

New V6 is a new DOHC 3.7L Duratec that's 300+ hp, 280 tq.

New 5.0 is as above, 415 hp, 390 tq, Redline is 6800 rpm, dyno videos show it rev'ing to 7k+

Drivetrains are identical between the V6 and GT: all new Mustangs have a new Ford/Getrag developed manual 6-speed stock, optional 6-speed automatic, going out through the traditional 8.8" LSD rear.

There will be a new Track Pack option at least for the V6 (though I can't see it not being offered on the GT) that will include 19" rims (yuck!), upgraded brakes (yay!), and I believe different springs and swaybars.

No word yet on any special editions, though someone digging through Ford's parts computer has seen reference to an all-aluminum 5.4 that will supposedly be the new motivation for the GT500. Knowing Ford, they'll leave the GT500 mostly alone for right now, though the rumor mill is convinced that it will be getting a twin-turbo version of the new 5.0 at some point.

I expect that when the new Boss 6.2 (or is it a 6.8?) comes out, there'll be an uproar to put it in a Mustang, and I would think it'd be a perfect match to for a new Mach 1.

If gas prices go back up, I'd love to see a new SVO with an Ecoboost motor and road race suspension (parts-binned from one of the FR500s), with the unnecessary parts dropped out (radio delete, A/C delete, etc); though I'm sure it'll be out of my price range if they do.

Personally, I'd take a new 2011 V6 and turbo charge it to 400+hp, then go full Griggs GR40TT or RT suspension; with a well layed out plan you could get the weight down to <3200lbs., this would be a hell of a track car IMO.

is it really a new engine or is it just an upgraded version of the 4.6 with some more valves, cams, and displacement?

Yup. All new engine. NOT a mod motor.

I worked on the exhaust development on this car and it is a beast. In my opinion, a much better car than the camaro and challenger. We do the exhaust for both of those cars too.

It might be 3600 lb but the handling isn't too bad. With 300 hp they should sell a ton of the V6 models.

OK. bore & stroke is different, but you still have DOHC's, VVT chains & spockets, open valley; seems still a mod motor to me. What am I missing?

Here's something interesting, Ford will introduce nine new or upgraded engines and six new transmissions in North America this year as part of a five-year effort to overhaul its entire global powertrain portfolio, which totals 60 new powertrains.

The nine engines are:

  • 1.6-liter Fiesta I-4;

  • 2.0-liter Focus DI I-4;

  • 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4;

  • 3.5-liter F-150 EcoBoost V-6;

  • 3.7-liter Mustang V-6;

  • 5.0-liter Mustang V-8;

  • 5.4-liter Shelby GT 500 V-8;

  • 6.2-liter Super Duty (gas);

  • 6.7-liter Super Duty Power Stroke.

The new transmissions are:

  • 6-speed automatic FWD;

  • 6-speed PowerShift Fiesta;

  • 6-speed PowerShift Focus;

  • 6-speed manual Mustang;

  • 6-speed automatic Mustang;

  • 6-speed automatic TorqShift Super Duty.

Here's the article, it's worth a read FORD LAUNCHES UNPRECEDENTED NINE NEW ENGINES, SIX NEW TRANSMISSIONS IN NORTH AMERICA IN 2010

As a GT500 owner, I'm looking at that "5.4-liter Shelby GT 500 V-8" above, thinking "new or upgraded", and hoping it means an aluminum block.

I agree. This is why I bought a 2008 Corvette instead. Thirty two hundred is bad enough. And the LS3 is a sweet, sweet engine.

That those are features of a mod motor, but not what defines one. Modular is in reference to the assembly plant, not any particular feature of the motors outside of being built in one.

I've heard differing things, and honestly, I've been too busy to check it out in detail. First I heard it was all new. Then I heard it was based off of the Modular. Here's hoping it's the former.

And as for high compression ratios, it might not be such a bad thing. Rather than having to see every Mustang owner (with a Modular) supercharge their engine to get big power, we'll see some N/A examples, like the GM crowd.

Yeah, they're getting almost 400 from much less displacement than the LS3, which is a good sign. I owned a 2000 Mustang GT for quite a while and had to put a blower on it to get descent power. The Romeo engine was just a boat anchor. Wasn't it one of Jack Nasser's ideas?

it is an all new motor. Ford was going to borrow a jaguar engine but couldn't do that since they wete sold

just for entertwainment value: the Parnelli Jones Edition Saleen was a 5.0L modular engine making just over 400HP. Mild bore increase with more stroke. Normally aspirated. If they hadn't decided to cut up the air box so much the hood scoop would have been fully functional... It was a blast to drive, even at 3400 lbs.

Less displacement but 16 more valves and 3 more camshafts! The only thing I dislike about the new stangs is the "refined" interior. I really enjoy the interior on my 06 , the only thing I really like is the upgraded radio and ac controls, and it looks like they fixed the crappy door panel insert problem.

Funny how the new V6's have more power than the old V8's from the late '80's. Gotta love technology!

When the new 'stang came out in '05 I knew it was going to be a winner. I like the latest version even better.

Funny how the Camaro V6 had more horsepower than the Stang V8...hence why the Mustang got a new engine with more power. Why spend $28k on a Mustang when a $23k base V6 Camaro has just as much HP?
