Wife's battery died at work. Lights left on ... Oops!

Went to try to jump her hat but trucks parked on both sides. Went to try to push it out but it wouldn't go out of park. Key on, foot on brake. Still no movement.in the gear selector Is this normal? Sure makes it hard to jump a car!

The brake interlock on some cars is electronic. If so, there's usually a little cover near the shifter you can pop off to access a manual override.

I know that it was electronic on my wifes' 2005 Mazda 3. I used to "play" with it when I was bored in the drivers' seat. Lightly press the brake pedal about 1/8" and you'll get a solid "thunk" as the lock disengages.

Hmmm. So how do you override it when the battery is dead?

There should be a small plastic cover somewhere on the shifter bezel you can pop off to access the manual override.

You can even see it in this picture, look just to the right of the shifter. Pop it off, jam something in there (usually the key works great) to release the shifter, then do what you gotta do:

That information should be in the owners manual. I will check when SWMBO arrives at humble abode.

Yeah, theres sort of a flat spot to push on that disengaged the interlock. Ive done it several times with several different vehicles.
