Any idea here to look? Speaker wiring? Head unit gone?

Do they have the touch screen system? Not sure if it's related or not, but the MyTouch...or TouchMyself...whatever the hell it was called, is known to be finicky. My '13 ST had occasional issues with the stereo not responding to inputs. I would change the radio station, or try to, and it would literally take it 2-3 minutes to respond. I updated the software and it cured 95% of the issue.
I've got the base radio in my 2013, but no issues like you describe.

Sounds like either loose wire or more likely blown speaker. I had one used to behave very similarly. New speakers fixed it.
