Suppose I purchase a car for $400. I sell various parts from the car for $500. Is my recoup for my build budget $500? Or am I limited to $400?

Second question. Suppose I'm competing in the $1008 build class. Is my recoup allowance from parts sold still $1008? Or is it $504?

Thanks in advance

Jim

From the rules: "For 2016, the most you can recoup through parts sales is $1008"

I don't think there is any limit on recoup vs purchase price. For purchase price:

"For 2016, the max you can initially pay for a Challenge car is $2016."

I think the above it intended to generate an upper threshold.

Thanks. Not trying budget shenanigans. Just trying to play by rules for what is likely a poor finish in my first challenge.

I thought the most you could recoup from a car was what you paid for it or half of the competition year whichever is less. But I could be wrong.....

Yes, I believe that is true. A $600 car can be recouped to $600. A $1200 car can only get $1008 assuming that is all you are claiming. With maximum recoup, you can spend up to 1.5x the year or $3024.

That's how I understand it too.

It's probably a moot point because I doubt I can recoup any where near the purchase price of my car from what junk I pull off it. The Justang build seems to have sold more in parts than the car purchase price subject to $1007 cap but I may be wrong.

In any event better to err on side of caution. This is abo,it having fun and not bending budget rules

I remembered this as well, but I could not find that language anywhere in the 2016 rules. Nor could I find any language disallowing it... So, theoretically, one could show up with a negative value car?

I picked up on that as well in the magazine feature on that car. They claimed more recoup than allowed, based on my understanding of the rules.

Well, whatever the rules it's still good cheap, fun event. And regardless I will say it's turned out to a lot of fun and the budget constraints really make the entrants, our team included, to get creative and innovative.

where is this rule you guys are talking about? I read the rules as the most you can recoup through parts sales/trade is 1008. It doest not matter what the price of the car was as long as it was under the price of the year.

Take this with a grain of salt as I have never been to the challenge:

I think the rule used to be worded that you can not recoup more than the purchase price of the car up to a max of half the challenge budget. The way I read the current rule, you can recoup up to half the budget ($1,008 in 2016). It doesn't mater if you buy the car for $2000 or $20, you can recoup up to a total of $1,008 from selling parts off of it.

Sell $1008 worth of stuff off a $400 car and still be left with something to race = I won't be mad, I'll be impressed.

Well... right now I've spent about $600 on my car (Purchase price and parts) and sold my $1008 full allowance of parts. So my current build budget is negative $400.
