Bumping the budget limits on this year's build. Have AX tires covered. Even though down on power last year AX tires were obviously not optimal last year. Can't find budget friendly drag radials/slicks. Are a used set of appropriately sized street tires a better alternative to AX tires for the strip?

Define budget friendly?

What'd you pay for the ax tires?

I have some 16 inch slicks I was given by a fellow competitor on some used firebird wheels. I am using them on both my builds this year. You are welcome to make some passes on them if you have some room un the budget.

AX TIRES were excluded from budget...I've probably got less than $150 left in budget for something for 2 drag tires. Need something in 275-315x17".I have 17 wheels spare.

I'm really curious how much dedicated drag radial will improve over ax tires.

Thx, jeremy...will firebird wheel offset work on this 89 c4?

I learned my lesson on lending tires and borrowing team didn't apparently include in their budget

Did you spend less than $300 on the AX tires? If so, (2) of those, and the two drag tires become your (4) exempt. I had dropped $250 on a pair of new 275 15's for drag w/ the intention of finding cheaper AX tires, almost certainly a set from USDDRT on ebay. I understand if you're committed to the AX tire/wheel choice you already have, but wanted to point it out as a potential option.

In reply to bluej:

Yeah...spent 550 on 200 TW tires to use in ax. This year I'll have a set of 315x18 Hoosier true ax compunds that were given to me but will have to claim whatever FMV for 2 if I purchase drag specific tires. I understand what you're saying, tho.

I remember reading that snow tires make good drag tires. It was an old drag racers trick used if they were in a street tire class.

I've actually had good luck launching on snows.

Might be difficult to find snows in 275-315 section though!

You can probably find a set of used slicks for 150 or under, but in 17" wheel size definitely makes it a lot harder. Maybe see if you can't find some worthless 15" wheels to run the type of slicks you can afford in the budget?

You could run a set of drag radials for both events. There are a couple people that have done that in the past that worked our well.

Jim if you have aX slicks all you need is to be sure the tire dosn't spin on the rim, pretty sure they put down traction goo on the drag Strip

I'm not sure I've ever experienced either of those scenarios. ax slicks working well for drag racing or a tire spinning on its rim (a blowout or de-bead, sure, but not spin).

huh! I just ment they will work, not like a set of M&H's for sure, You probably don't make enough Power. why the HECK do you think all those Screws are in drag car rims.

As I understand problem is more with stiff sidewalls on ax tires. Last year I dropped pressure down to 24 lbs but didn't matter as car was running like crap....just ask stampie

Truer words have seldom been spoken!

Ax slicks are decidedly terrible at drag racing though - very stiff sidewalls. My 15.2 second bmw with LSD had trouble hooking up on ax slicks (hoosier A7) on the very well prepped track at Gainesville.

Ive heard here of multiple cars running Circle Track slicks deep into the 12s. What's the secret there because that's my plan?

If they're bias ply will be fine....stiff sidewalls maybe not so much.

F40 Hoosier bias ply slicks. Sidewalls definitely dont feel as flexible as a wrinkle wall, but much softer than an sm7.

I'd be interested in buying a pair if I can find some cheep 15 inch wheels...seems like you got a bunch of them IIRC

We also ran ax tires in the drags down to 18 psi but spun 1st gear all the way while leaving a certain C4 behind me. This year we're bringing drag tires.
