Meant to say "of"....
Would a simple racing series at the same cost, without the themes, costumes, penalties, etc. hold greater or less appeal?

Less!
Jay uses that stuff to determine if the people are going to be any fun! The second you get a bunch of win-at-all-costs guys in there, it's going to be like any other spec series, which is the very thing he is trying to avoid! Who can be a win-at-all-costs person whilst dressed in lederhosen!?
Thus ends my post, in which every sentence has ended with an exclamation point, how exciting!
To me it would be more applealing, Id have no interest in participating in the 24 hours of lemons with all the silly stuff they do there.
Thanks for your response, notice that I didn't directly state my preference initially, not that I'm afraid of getting flamed but rather I'm just curious what others think.
I'm solidly in tuna55's camp! Dammit, there's too much serious racing already! I blew too many years being serious about having fun!

I guess watch Chump Car to find out.
I prefer the lighter nature of Lemons.
I've done LeMons and Chump Car, I'd be happy as a clam if we could skip the "theme" business altogether. Sure, it's fun, but I don't need a sanctioned endurance race to make a silly car, I can do that to any ol' back-40 beater.

Keep in mind that the chump cars have themes and require a story about your theme to get accepted into the race, pretty much the same as LeMons except fewer jokes about the organizers getting drunk while reading race applications.

Never heard of "chump car" so I looked it up. Looks to be more of the same judging from their rules on their website...
■Want to make sure that you get in the race? Better come up with some creative theme or some really off-the-wall engineering. ■If you screw-up… you'll either be docked laps or you’ll have to face "The Wrecking Crew." We hope that you’re as good at fixin' cars as they are at dismantling them.

See...I would need a good enough reason to make a silly car. I have the back 40 beaters and they're so much fun to drive that I never get around to doing anything silly with the appearance (outside of a quick stencil, stupid bumper sticker, and/or Schlitz can JBWelded to the roof).
I've not participated in any of the sanctioned events though...
LESS!!!
No one forces anyone to do a theme for LeMons. Hell, there are plenty of cars in SC with no theme, and I don't recall ever saying what our "theme" was going to be on our application. If we were to enter another similar series, we'd still do something silly (see: Challenge) as we enjoy getting a laugh out of people.
Some of my favorite stories to tell from LeMons...the ones that get the laughs...are about the punishments. This year's "Socialist Indoctrination Penalty" was one of the best ever. And I giggle every time I think about our buddy Tom chugging down a peanut butter chicken salad marshmallow fluff sandwich. He was so hungry, he asked for more.

Are you sure they're jokes?

I recall seeing something i the latest GRM story about LeMons that not having a theme was almost a guarantee to be passed over...
Well, he made it in with no theme, what, three times, poop?
You have to be interesting. You hold a race where you get hours and hours of track time for that cheap, and you get hundreds of apps - gotta narrow it down somehow. This isn't for typical spec-racer types. I was bred on drag racing, and seeing super stock car classifications will make you autoX guys go crazy. You talk about "hot ticket" cars that have a better chance and all, but in SS/(letter) you have to have ONE car with ONE engine or you have no chance, most of the time. That makes me sick. I like to play and have fun, nearly all lemonheads do - if you don't, as the rules state, go get your own race.

Well, you read it, so it must be true. What the berkeley would I know.
EDIT: Sorry, ranted about something completely off topic.
If you want something without the silliness, check out ChumpCar. $1500 limit, and is supposedly great racing. I'd be willing to give it a shot.
To each his own, for sure.
I've done LeMons, vintage and NASA.
I will continue to do vintage and NASA because I've had a ball doing it. I've run through T1 at Pocono North doing 110 mph while surrounded by a gaggle of SpecMiatas. What a hoot! And I've vied for that one perfect apex point with six other Sprites within inches of me doing the same thing. And we're all in 4th gear at 5500 rpm.
I never got that kick with LeMons. I just seemed more like driving through Philadelphia at 5:30 PM on a weekday. Honestly, some of the folks on the street in Philly have weirder "costumes".
But hey, whatever floats your boat.....if you like, do it.
