911 for me, any day, any where
I've had early 911s and I've had early Zs. The Z is prettier, but the 911 is the better sports car.
911 gets my vote.
There's actually a lot of models that have a lot of appeal post '73, but pre-'74 is a slam dunk.
Of course, I am biased. Also, I'd be happy to have either car; how can you lose?
I've done the 911 thing and the knowledge base and aftermarket support are unbelievable (yay Pelican Parts). And the Z is highly sought after, and parts I understand are expensive, so the Z's original price advantage over the Porsche I think has seriously eroded.
A good point was made about what year you're comparing. Yes, the 911 had some less desirable years (2.7 liter cars) but so did the Z, when it got heavy and complicated in the 80s. The OP specified 240Z and pictured an SC or Carrera so let's go with those.
I think the SC will outperform the 240Z, and the Carrera even moreso.
For me, the Z is a cool car with great history, good looks and I like straight-6 engines, but it is still bounded by its' car-ness. Whereas the 911 transcends being just a car and achieves a higher level of being. It is raw yet incredibly honed, very mechanical yet not rickety, incredibly solid but not overly heavy, is burly yet delicate in a precision-sort of way. The Z is a car you drive but a 911 becomes your co-pilot with incredible communication and feel.
For some people the 911 just doesn't resonate. I understand. But for those that understand it, well, there is no substitute. Automotive journalists drive everything and there's a reason the 911 has been a major benchmark for so many years. Er, decades.

I own an S30 Z and vote for it. Lower buy in for the car and it's much easier and cheaper to work on and modify yourself. Huge aftermarket and the potential for dozens of engine swaps makes it the hands down winner
Plus the timeless styling means you talk to people everywhere you stop in one.
I'd love to own a really nice Z, but, at this point, I think it's much easier to find a good 911.
I guess I've already cast my vote in favor of the Porsche though...
i so want to build an STR 911. yeah, it'd get killed - but would be the coolest car on the grid by far...
Z - nice, great historical value, passion level like left over macaroni and cheese.
I like the 911, but I love the Z.
And I wanted you to know I hate you, because now I'm looking at 240z's again.
I have always wanted both. But, I would have to lean towards the 911. The 911 was one of those "dream" cars for me growing up, more so than the Z-cars. On a pure objective level, the 911 styling is nothing special. But on a subjective level, it excites me greatly. Cannot explain it. In fact, this thread along with "The Dirty 911..." thread has caused me to spend hours over the last couple days searching craigslist, autotrader, etc. for a 911.
I didn't get into the 911's styling till the 90's.... I can appreciate the car, but I'll take the classic Z.
