I saw this, and thought "FAKE!" But I see it being discussed in the Snopes forums, and there's also:

$26k sounds too high...but more realistic than $600.

Articles are old...anyone know if it made it past the concept stage?

I just got that office email about this car.

VW seems to be better at hype and concepts than actually marketing a car anymore.

Where's the new Scirocco? How about the EcoRacer? New VW Van? (Or is the rebadged Dodge supposed to count?)

I want to love them, but I can't stand the disappointment anymore.

That vehicle is old, old news. As irrelevant an exercise as THAT one was from the perspective of wanting a production vehicle, VW's focus and expertise in carbon fiber and diesels have brought them a long way in the years since.

The first paragraph here references the old car you linked. The new XL1 is very real and imo an impressive vehicle.

More pictures. http://www.motortrend.com/future/concept_vehicles/1101_volkswagen_xl1/index.html

Considering the many similarities between the XL1 and the 01 Insight i already drive, i could picture getting used to it pretty quickly. However, the XL1 looks to give up a little speed (NOT a good thing, coming from an Insight) and a lot of cargo capacity (same deal) vs my 10 yr old 50mpg hybrid, so i wouldnt say its really ready for the mainstream. Give it a modicum more acceleration and a little utility, sell it for mid 20s, and i think it would work great. As it is, it's way too niche for most people to care about. But it definitely does exist, and work.

Good points, Vigo.

I can see this being very attractive for people in high density areas; if I were willing to get rid of all my cars to move to San Francisco, I would totally buy into this. It's actually significantly more attractive than a Smart car, but like the Smart, it would be a fairly limited market.
