Trying to help a friend in the UK that is restoring a formula car from the 90's. He needs two, 3/8 eyebolts for the harness anchors. The thread is UNF, which I believe will be our "fine" thread. Everything he can find in the UK and Europe is metric.

The harness eyebolts I'm seeing online are 7/8.  Any suggestions? TIA.

Try McMaster-Carr.

Looks like they only have 7/8...

How sure is he on the thread size?  FIA approved seat belt mounting eyebolts are 7/16 - 20 and have been for a very long time.  If his car has 3/8 - 24 mounting holes and he plans on racing it he should upgrade to 7/16 -20.  If it 's a steel chassis car that's pretty straight forward.  If a composite tub then that's more of a project but he still needs to do that if he's going to race with any sanctioning body that does a real tech or he cares about his driver.

The link Tom posted are for the correct 7/16 - 20 eye bolts.  Not 7/8.

Thanks for all of the help. The McMaster Carr stuff are lifting bolts, so I don't think they'd have the proper shear strength.

I'll revert to my friend regarding changing to 7/16-20, I'm finding a lot of those specifically for harness mounting.

This is a pic of the project he sent me, has a Renault engine.

That looks like a tube chassis car so changing to the correct size should be pretty straight forward.  Based on the photo, the fact that it has a Renault engine and my limited knowledge of the series I'm guessing it's a Formula Renault.  If that's the case then the holes should already be 7/16 - 20.  I'm guessing he miss-measured.

Could very well be, he's having trouble finding anything other than metric fasteners.

Ask him if it's closer to 10mm or 11mm?

If it's UNF then it should be Grade 5 or Grade 8, but eye bolts aren't identified as hex heads are.   What do the Techs in his race category require?  Comparable to 12.9,  more?   (12.9 is ~20% more than 10.9)

Do you need strength Certification to pass Tech?

He's certain they are 3/8. I'll keep looking and if anyone had any leads please post them. If they can't be found, he will rework the mounting points for another size eye bolt.

Thanks for all the help!

In reply to mightymike :

It really shouldn't be an issue of finding them. The issue should be upgrading them because they are undersized.

Didn't we all just watch Andrew Nelson survive because he takes safety seriously?

IIRC, 7/16-20 (7/16 UNF) is the international standard for seat belt mounting hardware.  German, Japanese, Korean, it is always 7/16-20.  I would not be surprised to learn that the FIA deemed that to be the standard as well.

Every harness I have ever bought also came with a load of hardware in that size.

In conclusion, if all he can find is metric, that may be because he is looking for generic hardware and not seatbelt specific hardware.  Which is why they chose such an esoteric thread.
