I need to get into this. It seems like the best cheap way to do this is with an iThing? According to one internet source I found, iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, and iPad Pro all have lidar which makes scanning more accurate than just photographic scanning.
Video below has a couple of options for entry-level scanning, but its a bit more than a year old. Anyone know if there is more up to date data yet?
From my experiences last year with photogrammetry, splurge a little and buy something like a Revopop scanner.
I tried using a Microsoft Kinect, and failed. Tried pulling stills from 4k video, and failed. Tried still shots and a turntable, and failed. Tried printing a scanner base to use with phones and it failed despite several glowing videos and instructables.
I'm just Going to buy this.
I also hate Apple products, refuse to own any, and know nothing about their available software, so kinda useless for the original question. Just explaining my difficulties.

I'm also firmly in the android camp, however my wife has an iPhone, and if she wants to upgrade and let me use it from time to time, who am I to say she doesn't get to be happy?
$600 DSLR with a telescoping lens, a copy of Metashape that fell off a truck and a pump sprayer full of isopropyl and baby powder I was able to get this mesh with about 300 pictures.
I have struggled with small items with the setup above but can do cars and larger stuff pretty reliably.

Interesting. Know of any scratch and dent sales for Metashape?
I think I found it on sale on the Bay of Pirates

Ahh, I generally lean towards legal but discounted via various methods.
I have an iPhone 13 Pro. Bought the new phone in part because I was excited about 3D scanning.
It works pretty well for big stuff like cars, but I haven't been able to get a clean result on small items or on items with thin walls (like a transmission bellhousing).
Anybidy have a recommended app?
I've played with the free version of Polycam on my iPhone 11 which is just using photogrammetry and their off phone system to stich everything back together. I tried it out laying under my car with some work lights to get a 3D image of the oil pan and subframe, took the pictures waited a half hour and what came back blew me away. I haven't paid to upgrade the app though and you need to do that to actually pull the scan out of it, I think it's worth downloading and trying if you don't have one of the more advanced phones though.

It's really annoying that photogrammetry software doesn't use the ubiquitous depth sensors on almost every phone.
My phone has a 2MP depth sensor, that plus the visual info would make the reconstruction much more robust, but it's only used by the crappy photo app to simulate depth of field.
