2005 Chevy Astro Van AWD. Transmission lost 2nd gear. My question is, the removed transmission is a 5TAD. We picked up a rebuilt 1TAD from a 2001 Chevy Blazer 4WD, for a very good price. Green plug, and the pins are the same (13). Information on the 4l60e is all over the place. I mean VERY hard to decipher. Will this work? Help us GRM Kenobi's, you're our only hope.
Don't think so. Pwm pressure control is the biggest. Lots of various changes between 00-04.
Picked it up on the off chance that the Astro has an 09/04 build. Apparently? 00-04 may be similar. Can Pwm be fiddled with? The info on these transmissions is weird, at best. And these electronic transmissions are all voodo to me. Thanks.
Bump for a new set of eyes. Seems like the 4l60 transmission is as varied as stars in the sky. Maybe the hive can point me in a direction of compatibility. Thanks.
I'm only mildly aware of the changes, but here's my 0.02. I thought all of those were after the change to PWM TCC and pressure control that happened in 1997ish (EC3 or ECCC in GM speak), but I could be wrong. The next electrical change was when they got another speed sensor and went away from the manifold pressure switch, which I think was out in 2008 or something when they moved to the new PCM.
You have both transmissions now, right? In the absence of better information, I'd pull the pans and compare wiring harnesses and valve bodies. If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that electrically those units should interchange, but mechanically you may find some differences. A lot of those transmissions had different separator plate orifices, boost valve, etc, but you might get lucky since they're both 4.3l trucks.

Thanks for the input. Yeah, the 4l60e has lots of changes, makes it confusing for the casual replacement guys like me and my son.

Thank you for your info. Yes we have both. Well, sort of. Bought the transmission near me, my son lives 185 miles away, and the transmissions are now at my son's friend's shop in south Jersey. Well traveled without it attached to anything. Today they will break it all down for the install. On top of all this, he's doing a manual 4x4 transfer case swap. But it should be fun.....
I have controlled an 03 transmission with a 98 pcm with no changes and now it's running on an 01 silverado pcm and program. no experience between 01 and 05 though
Thank you to all for the info. This is a long distance diagnosis session, lol. My son got the transmission in, along with the manual 4x4 conversion. It shifts all gears fine, but it is now pushing tranny fluid out of the dipstick tube. The install had to go on hold because his friend's shop was holding a Dyno shootout at the shop. Some pretty impressive numbers from some of the "grudge" cars. My son was telling me that although some of the cars were putting down 950+ hp at the wheels, they were holding back. Must have been quite the pecker checker event. Any more info on this pumping fluid out would be appreciated, although Monday the Astro goes back on the rack to figure it out.
