Does anyone have an idea of where I should start with this car? I was thinking of subframe connectors and new struts/springs. I'm trying to stay under $1000 though, and wheel/tire is eating that up fast.

new tires is probably the easiest and biggest initial benefit. What are you increasing the handling for? IE. what will the car be used for? Are you going to autocross? road race? what class are you going to be in?
just a few things to take into consideration before throwing down that cash.
Is that a T-tops car? The Subframe connectors will work pretty well, but they won't be hugely beneficial unless you pair them with stiffer springs and swaybars.
No insult intended, but a high performance driving school is going to make you much faster like the tires will.
My CMC1 car has minimal improvements and these cars handle pretty damn good.
My understanding of 4th-gen F-bodies is that you're starting off with a fairly decent setup, SLA front, torque arm rear, so you're not looking at the full replacements that a same-year Mustang owner would.
I hear that the stock wheels are HEAVY, and if that's true, getting a set of lighter wheels would certainly be a good starting point.
I'm not sure what geometry would need to be addressed when you lower the car, though I'm sure there's something that will need to be corrected... is bumpsteer an issue with SLA?
This is the guy I'd be talking to... he's got a string of SCCA F-stock wins in F-bodies (though he's currently jumped ship to the S197 Mustang): Stranoparts
+1 on Rev Dexters recommendation...
Sam Strano is a wealth of info with these cars, I'd talk to him before most anyone...
+1 on sam strano, plus if you go to his website he has all kinds of package deals on parts.
I noticed the biggest difference with a big front sway bar, then added strano springs, koni single adjustable shocks, and then sub-frame connectors. All have helped make the car very smooth. Still gotta throw in a couple more suspension do-dads I have laying around.
Thanks all so much for the advice! I'm obviously noob and am looking to set my car up as a street legal/track day car to ENJOY. No competition in mind for this one seeing as I am blessed by the pressence of our Mazdaspeed Protege in my drive right now! I am looking forward to driving school when I can afford it.
