I just found out that the 2002-2005 Explorers used the 4.6 2V with that transmission. It would be a big improvement over the 4R70W with its 3-4 WOT problems.
Heck, find a 1996-1998 GT with a blown powertrain combo and just throw in both the aluminum motor and the 5R55 from the Explorer - boom, you're already ahead of the game against a New Edge
