Called it. Last issue of Sportscar they had 60 pages that went on and on about SOLO National Championship. I said we might get 6 pages. We got 5 and a photo of mud. (Yes I realize the #'s are different between events but for a program they keep raving about being the fastest growing program and how awesome it is, it isn't hard to feel like they treat us as the bastard step-child.)

And the only roll-over of 3 they even mentioned was Leon's and that was only so they could blame it on mechanical failure.

The first rule of rallycross is we don't don't about rallycross?

I also love the fact that all the trophy winner pictures from the Solo coverage had that nice professional background and everything while the Rallycross photos were taken by standing somebody on a step stool.

To a degree, I think it makes sense that there will be more coverage of the Solo nationals -- if you're going to have a paragraph about each class winner, they've managed to come up with so many classes it's going to kill some trees. I also kind of understand why they might downplay the destruction a bit -- Rallycross already has a bit of a perception about it that it's going to break things on a car because you're driving it off the pavement, so trying to make it look a little less... breaky kind of makes sense.

Hey, at least Sportscar was there and covering it unlike another national publication that I might mention ;)

RallyX nationals - 109 competitors in 9 classes
Solo nationals - 1157 competitors in ~90 classes (there is over 100 classes including ladies but I am not sure if all those classes had competitors this year so call it about 90) Also add in that the solo coverage I believe covered the ProSolo Finale(a separate event held just before nationals)

So on a per person or per class basis that looks to be about the right amount of coverage for rallyx.

I would expect sportscar to spout the party line and leave out the bad stuff about the rollovers.

How many classes are there for RallyCross? How many classes for Solo?

They mentioned two rollovers. The kid from CO (I know his dad but my mind is blank) got mention in the MF section. It said that he ended both his and his dad's weekends, which is true but only because he was driving his dad's car at that point because his car had previously de-transmissioned itself.

In reply to mazdeuce:

I admit I only breezed thru it at lunch yesterday, I missed the 2nd one then. I was just looking for Ed's and the photo I took of him standing on top like "We are the Champions!"

Speaking as a guy who gets to assign pages to event coverage, it's a tough rope to walk. Many say that they don't care about magazine event coverage. Of course, those who were there speak a very different tune.

Just a little friendly ribbing =) I get that you've got to try to appeal to the broadest audience and have limited resources to be able to cover everything going on out there.

Mind you, you're also writing this in the forum of a magazine whose only presence at the event was a box of old magazines in the back of the lunch tent that was brought up by absolutely nobody.

Also, it was in a disused lavatory with a sign that said "Beware of Leopard."

How many of those classes had near equal winning times? Are that many classes really required?

That's one of the things that turns me off about Solo. It's like you just show up to get a participation trophy, because you're in the '89 Civic With Blue Trim class. Then someone protests you because they know for a fact that the Blue Trim cars had a different climate control knob.

Likewise. I understand that SANE people would not want to stand in the middle of a frigid windstorm in Nebraska for three days.

will admit that it's been that bad in the past … but not lately … IIRC there weren't any protests this yr

as for the amt of classes … keep in mind that a lot of the classes are the Ladies classes .. not nearly as well represented as the open classes … and even then some of the open classes are on the low side

but with 1100+ entries compared to <200 entries ……..

You can have 1000 competitors and your parking lot isn't going to get rutted and destroyed in Solo. The thought of 1000 rallycross cars on a field......there would be 2' deep trenches everywhere, lol.

You could then get into arguments about various other reasons as well.....

Funny thing is that Solo Nationals had about 10x the number of competitors as Rallycross Nats. But I'd venture to guess that Solo around the country has 100x or 200x the number of competitors overall that rallycross does. Could be that a higher proportion of rallycrossers actually went to nationals compared to Solo, if you think about it....

I've never understood ladies classes. Do women have some physical or mental difference from men that prevents them from driving a car just as fast> It's not like this is a weightlifting competition or something.

And yeah, I know SCCA does it to try to attract more women. But if I was a woman I'd be insulted that SCCA thinks I need to run in a "girls class" because I can't keep up with the men in their cars. Talk about sexist, lol....

Everyone who lost to Breanne Corn probably wished for a ladies class

For what it's worth, I read the Pobst Position and the RallyX article and will probably not look at the rest of the magazine. Really, the only time I go through all the other stuff is if I'm trying to figure out what cars have been competitive in a certain class.

Just got my SportsCar. Imagine that, people are talking about it like the magazine came out, or something.

(I only read SportsCar for the Tire Rack ad. And I flip through it to see whose car is on the RallyCross blurb page. They ran ZB's Golf a few times but it seems that they only run a certain red Civic anymore)

they aren't required to run in the girls class … the other class is call open for a reason

there are a variety of reasons …

quite often the ladies lack the competitive gene and won't even come to the events if they HAVE to race against guys … even though many of them can, and do, beat us guys

there's the 2 driver cars, and the the desire to win tires … if a couple were driving in the same class, and both are capable of podium finishes, they end up racing against each other, and often wouldn't do it if without the second class …

those are just 2 examples of why … there's lots more … when you get a really large overall pic of why, it starts to make pretty good sense
