a neighbor has a '68 mustang 302 / 4sp that he's looking to update. i'm going to do the work for him, but have never messed around with an old mustang. looking to lower about 2" all around, install 4-wheel disc brakes, front and rear anti-roll bars, and step up to the 17" bullitt wheels. after all that, if there's any money left, thinking about GT40P heads or a complete roller-cam 5.0.

looking for a website / board for these cars with a GRM-like signal to noise ratio. any recommendations?

also, anyone know of reasonably-priced brake upgrades for these cars? is there a combination of junkyard parts that bolts on and kicks ass? if not, i'm going to design a set of adapters to run S197 brakes at all four corners.

This website seems to have quite a bit of info on the first gen mustangs.

In reply to AngryCorvair:

For low buck, up front Maverick or Granada disc brake spindles bolt up. There are two sizes IIRC, check: http://www.mustangsteve.com/granadadiscs.html

Low buck In the rear: you can buy adapters to fit Lincoln mark VII calipers and rotors from: http://www.ultrastang.com/

Or just get an explorer rear axle, cut off the mounting tabs and weld new ones on.

Frankly the stock type suspension and brakes suck on these cars. I re-did the entire suspension with all new springs, shocks, urethane bushings, granada discs, new steering box, etc. It still rode and drove like a pickup truck. If I had it to do all over again (and I still was into old mustangs) I'd save my pennies for some thing like this: http://www.totalcontrolproducts.com/fcoc-fd.html

By the way I bought a lot of parts from www.mustangsplus.com, they were pretty cool and stocked some interesting stuff.

Here's one probably relevant thread: Corner-Carvers.com vintage Mustang Search that site and you'll find more real tech on these cars, you just have to filter out the Fox chassis stuff.

From an old email I saved when I was thinking about buying/swapping for one a couple years ago regarding the Granada brake swap:

Some guy who is smarter than I said: I have heard good and bad about the Granada swap, the bad is that it could cause bad bump steer problems. The good is they are adequate for track use. I am using the original spindles, but with the Baer 12" track kit. Also, 70-73 spindles fit but are not cheap to find. Has it had the "Shelby drop"? Where the front upper control arms have been dropped 1" or more. This can easily be detected by looking at the upper A arm mounting on the shock towers. Believe it or not, a decent source of info for me was our buddy Henry Jones aka historicmustang.com (who had his share of problems here on cc), but in person is one of the kindest gentlemen I have ever met. He is more low budget than me but gave me a lot of information, and in fact allowed me to drive his race car while at the track one day last year. He might have the Granada brakes on his car, but I am not positive. Here is a website of a guy who built a GT350 clone, he has a story about the Granada swap: http://www.gt350clone.com/ Also the Mustangs Plus website has some tech info.
