My Mazda 808 Coupe is now officially running. It sounds a bit weedy as there is a hole in the exhaust or muffler somewhere. The front brakes have now been done too. Drove it up and down the driveway a couple times. That is as far as I can go until I get insurance and a plate for it.
A video of a running engine if anyone wants to see - http://www.flickr.com/photos/daveseven/5560453138/
Ok...Im a newbie when it comes to mechanics. But I do mostly body work and interiors. I wanted to get a car and fix it all up by myself. Ive had a fancy for old asian cars. I saw a pic of the mazda 808 and fell in love....Now my question is, Is there somewhere where I can get a step by step for installing the F2T into it? I could use all the information I can get.
Thanks!
They are pretty rare so I don't think there is a step by step anywhere. Most people seem to do Rx-3 conversions. The engine bay is pretty roomy. I saw a photo of one with a Ford V8 in it.
Look what I found in the trunk - a hitch for a 808 or Rx-3. Wild. Its got two bolts that connect to the bottom of the spare tire well and two that connect to the license plate holder. I can't imagine it would rated for much weight. I don't think I'll ever put it on but interesting piece.
Im not a rotary fan...thats why i was looking at the 808. What are the common non rotary swaps for it?
There are no "common" non-rotary swaps for the 808/818. Buy a RWD Corolla, they are way more common, and the swaps are well documented.
The cars are not common enough to have common swaps. I would like to see someone put a JE-ZE in one. It's a Mazda motor. It's cheap. It has 200hp.

Then grab an Escort GT motor or a Kia Sephia GS motor - same thing in a transverse package. Plug a dizzy into the back and a carb on the side, voila. No ECU. I don't know how much the B series and your motor share.
I don't know if the bolt pattern fits your transmission. It might. It's certainly worth doing some rooting around to see if it will.
I'd be for keeping the original motor unless you're doing something with a major hp increase, but I have to say that a Kia Sephia outdragged Charlie (the Lemons Amazon) down the back straight (no handling, I actually came out of the corner a bit faster and he caught and then pulled on me) at CMP a few years back, and I watched the "KIA" badge with not a little frustration as I screamed at Charlie "Come on Charlie, you've passed Porches and BMW's today and you're going to let a Kia have you!".
So I guess that one could work.

Don't beat up on yourself for that... there's a lot of "cheats" for that motor that aren't easily caught.
I like the JE-ZE idea. Wakes up with breathing mods pretty nicely, too, and they're EXTREMELY strong.
Looks like a little Muscle Car. Please oh please get some Minilites on that thing!

Oh really? If the mods mentioned by Keith really mean it can be mounted longitudinally with no ECU, I am actually interested in those, PM me?
I'd say pretty much anything could fit - the toughest part would be finding one. Check out the roomy engine by
Next to imposible but.. .. . .
Millenia S motor would be my evil plan.
The only significant external differences between a Miata motor and the Kia/Ford/Protege transverse applications are:
- oil pan
- intake manifold
- exhaust manifold
- distributor on transverse applications
- coolant routing
There's no room for the dizzy in the Miata application because it sticks off the back of the exhaust cam. If you can make room for it in a different car and bolt on a set of carbs, no ECU is required. The coolant routing is easy enough to deal with and the transverse version is actually more efficient.

Oooh, no. Nice motor, great idea, wonderful piece of engineering but talk about something ultra sensitive to botched tuning... I saw a couple of them hole pistons due to lean mixtures.

Yep. I'd just be going normal Millenia motor. The "KLG4" is a hell of a nice motor in itself.

The JE-ZE makes about the same power w/out forced induction, is already configured for rwd, and has a manual trans solution in the Mazda parts catalog.
Dean has had dreams of a Miller-cycle in just about any car for years now. I just hope he can do it someday, and I can help. If I remember right they are not very happy unless they are mounted on the angle they are on in the FWD application. Could be wrong though.
Chris
I'd rock a Milly Miller Cycle converted to 5spd as a badass daily driver...
Been half-assed looking at those cars.

Back 5-8 years ago, every time someone would bring up swapping a KL into a miata on miata.net, they would get shot down with something about the engines being mounted on a tilt in their FWD habitat, and not oiling correctly when run vertically. I think this is totally a myth. Part of my reasoning is this diagram I made, in which I tilted a cross section of a KL engine 10 degrees (this was the angle at which the miata.netters said it was mounted) and show that the drain plug is positioned such that oil could never fully drain, if the motor was in fact mounted at a tilt:
Can someone out there with an MX6/Probe/etc. confirm or deny that their engine is mounted at a tilt please?
-James
Oh, the envy in my wee heart right now! That's gorgeous! Congratulations!
Ok...Just a quick question then....Is it easy to get power out of the original engine?

It is NOT mounted at a 10 degree tilt. If there is a tilt, it's not visible with the naked eye. It's not like the old 4-banger Camrys.
I remember reading a few threads about that, and i thought that myth was shot down years ago. The "Kliata" doesn't seem to have oil issues. (Been trying to get the new owner on here.)

Quick answer is no. I suppose on could turbo it but otherwise there is no aftermarket for them.
Ahhhh...and there in lies my problem. So, I guess Im still on the hunt for a FR 1960s to 80s Asian rally car.
It is insured and plated finally.
My wife took this with her iPhone. Apart from re-adjusting to arm strong steering and vintage brakes it went well.
I took each one of my kids for a quick ride around the block separately as I didn't realize there where no back seat belts. Then I went for a longer drive on some back roads. I definitely need to get a muffler and it needs an alignment but otherwise drives well.
Could definitely use a 5th gear as the engine gets rather busy at even sub highway speeds. Does anyone know if an 80s Mazda B2000/B2200 5spd would fit?
