My brother calls me up the other day. He found an 89 Summit for $300. The good: its cheap and its from Montana, so no rot. The bad, its from Montana and I'm in Illinois, the 3rd gear is wonky and its got 250,000 miles. Bare it mind that these are highway miles. There is NO stop and go traffic in Montana.
From what I gather its a re-badged Mirage. How hard would it be to stick a 4G63 and trans out of a Diamond Star in one?
Best picture I found. Meh.

4g63- depending on the model of van (L or whatever their trim designations are), is a direct swap, or at least VERY close to one. I'd do it if I had the space. I had more information on them somewhere....
There's actually one of the vans around here with full awd DSM drivetrain... it's stupid fast.

As far as I remember from when I almost owned one, it's a matter of finding engine mounts from a turbo mirage and bolting it in if it's a hatch/coupe/4dr, not entirely sure about the wagons, but you never mentioned what body style it was. If you do actually do it, I had heard that you either keep the flywheel the car has, or you get the flywheel from a mirage turbo, as it helps with acceleration.

The Summit and Colt wagon is the Mitsubishi Expo wagon, just poorly rebadged.
E: Just to help, this is what a turbo Mirage gets you
