Colin was amazing. I remember him winning a rally one time with a broken wrist, shifting with his left hand.

Yup - he came along just when I was getting into WRC. Fun to watch and gone too soon.
I couldn't believe when my wife agreed to naming our first son Colin. She new exactly why I suggested it too.
wow.. I remember the day I heard the news. so long ago. Personally, It was 3 states and 3 companies ago..
he will always be missed.
When he died and Burns died I lost my passion for following WRC. I realized that I was in it for the drivers as much as the driving and was heartbroken at the loss.
Wow, nine years already. He died in a helicopter crash, didn't he? I'll have to look up what root cause was.
[Edit]: Looked it up... the accident was likely due to inappropriate low-level flight in an area where there was no reason for it to be. A shame regardless.

Same as a lot of people with money, (JFK Jr., John Denver) he decided to fly himself instead of hiring a pilot. I were rich, I'd by my own plane but I'd be damn sure to hire someone with 100,000 hours to fly it!
True. Graham Hill died flying his own plane, radioing that "I can make it to the airport" when told the fog was too dense - nope. I think it's an unfortunate combination of bravado and ego in many cases.

SRV, Rick Nelson, Lynyrd Skynyd, Otis Redding and Buddy Holly hired pilots.
It's helicopters man. I'm not saying they have some evil agenda against human kind. But I am saying the good die young in helicopters.

Yes, the circumstances are unfortunate and I don't like to dwell on them. Unfortunately, his son, another family friend and another boy were with him when they went down. The helicopter exploded on impact and it was not survivable.
Our heroes are sometimes flawed and a person who took the risks that McRae took in a car, often take risks outside of the car. I have seen people that are critical of McRae for this and although I understand this, show me someone who has lived a perfect life!
