But the automatic thing...that's a major ding against the Honder.

Well my listed weight is what the print out said at the public scale. I might have more hp than the 100 but I have not gone the the dyno shop yet.

Bench racing against the automatic Accord, I'm going to have to back the Corolla.

Take it from a longtime RWD Corolla owner and driver, though...be cautious when picking fights with known-to-be-fast/modded/well-driven Rabbit GTIs!

I'm gonna go with the Accord. We had a new '91 EX coupe with an auto that was a decent little performer back in the day.

Auto accord?

I used to have a '92 EX Coupe. It wasn't especially quick (and the EX has a bit more power than the DX/LX as I recall), but even in stock form it was a pretty good-handling car and I did a few autocrosses in it with decent results considering the poor p/w ratio. Overall, it had much more balanced handling than many other FWD cars I've owned over the years....

Having a 5MT is a must, though, to keep the engine in its fairly narrow power band. Mine was MT and once you found the sweet spot it felt like a small V6. The autotragic in the '92 accord is smooth but has poor gearing from what I remember...

If his is AT, I give the edge to Corolla. If his was MT, I'd give him the edge.

Willow looks to be fast but with long turns favoring a car with mid-corner grip/speed. RWD always wins when mid-corner balance is required... so if you have a decent hot-shoe and a decent suspension setup it should be a pretty easy win over an Accord auto. Make sure you have some sticky tires and good luck.

It looks like we have a new challenger, weighing in at 2500 pounds, with a 2.0 liter sohc 120 horsepower engine, we have a 1998 VW Jetta.

So here it is people, a 1981 Toyota Corolla RWD vs 1992 Honda Accord FWD vs 1998 VW Jetta FWD.

I have a friend with a jetta who wanted a piece of the action and so here we are. We are discussing changing race tracks to make things even because I have raced at Streets of Willow before so I have a slight advantage. It looks like we might end up racing at Buttonwillow Raceway either on the 26 or 27 of September. I still dont know the specs on the Jetta but from what I can tell it is mostly stock with minor bolt-ons. Either way, I look forward to passing both cars mid race. <img src="Photobucket" />

this is a representation of what my friends car looks like

Oh and I also want to add that the Jetta is a 5 speed manual.

If the Accord was a 5spd, I'd have to give that the nod. My high school/college car was a 5spd Accord and it was sorta, kinda quick...well, quick enough to leave behind lame-o's in V6 Mustangs and Camaros. However, the auto in that particular vintage easily kills most of the mighty 125 horses.

I vote win for Corolla. Should be an awesome race.

Man, my first car was an 82 corrolla auto with WAY over 200k on the clock. I'd love to find a coupe with a stick, I'd rock it all day long. That thing was a blast.

Even if you don't win, run it like hell and you'll make us proud!

I am not taking any chances. I am installing the rear sway bar and polyurethane bushings. Gota make sure this thing grips. Also, I have been on some forums trying to figure out if changing the timing setting will give me more performance out on the track. I will mess around with the air/fuel ratio on the carb and see what works best. As for my competitors, EFI, thats all I got to say.

Well as much as it hurts for me to admit it, I lost. The Accord was able to corner better and the extra horsepower gave it the edge it needed to stay in front. I had slower lap times in Corolla than my cousin in his Accord.

We are planning on going back to the track in February. This time I will be more prepared with better upgrades and fine tuning. For the upcoming event we have decided to upgrade to R compound tires but I can assure that I will win this time around. Oh, almost forgot, I will racing my te72 while my cousin will be in a 93 Accord Coupe 5 speed.

Having owned a '92 black EX coupe, that I loved much...I can honestly say that the phrase "the extra horsepower" was never associated with that car, lol...

Wow, seeing that video has made me think the word 'laborious' a lot.

But any kind of showdown that ACTUALLY HAPPENS after all the talk is alright by me

It's the race of cars-you-probably-drove-in-highschool! Love it. I wish I was closer, I'd bring an 89 Lincoln Continental with two taillights full of water. Might get a little slippery on the leather bench seats though.
