Does a 944 engine share the same bell housing shape/pattern or size as any VW Audi products? Just bench racing an idea for a mid engined Golf.

Nope. Only the 924 used the Audi bell housing pattern at the front.

The transaxle in the rear uses an Audi bell housing pattern, so an I5 or V8 swap could be done.

However, the 944 transaxle doesn't have the clutch arm components and the input shaft is different. You'd be better off with an Audi 5000 FWD transaxle or similar.

Well, the idea that I was pondering was a 944 engine with an Audi 5000 tranaxle. But if that will not work....

Audi AAN 20-valve DOHC turbo beast will blow the 944 engine out of the water and make prettier noises (see:Group B Audi's)
