Just bought a 95 miata on Saturday, commuting to and from work today the stick shift and the plastic transmission tunnel top got abnormally hot. My daughters 92 doesn't get hot at all. Is the trans low on fluid or is it something else?

Thanks Brian

I'm guessing that both the upper and lower rubber shift boots are shot and they're letting post-radiator hot air up into the console. If you remove the console and look down near the shifter, I'm pretty sure you'll see pavement. The rubber boots don't last very long on these cars.

Shift boots need to be replaced. I experience same symptom w/92 Miata

Thanks, I was worried the tranny was going to crap the bed. I can fix it latter.

Thats also directly above the cat, so you have exhaust heat coming up through the boot

It's a good time to pull the shifter, check it for grooves and wear and change the turret oil. Your shift feel will improve greatly.

And, replace the worn shifter bushings while you're in there
