Considering adding a cheap truck to the work fleet and a 98 f150 popped up for a decent price. Manual, has racks, not a million miles (162k), 4x4 and looks decent.
I've never owned a 4.6, what should I look out for? I remember intake manifolds leak and I assume it has the same problem all the early mod engines have with spark plugs ejection?

Yeah, '98 is in the possible list for plug ejection
If the intake was updated with the cast aluminum coolant crossover, it'll probably be ok. The early ones were plastic and prone to cracking. Aside from that and spark plug ejection, which can be fixed relatively easily, they're solid, reliable engines.
It clicks a lot of boxes for me too. I prefer manuals and even though it's not the most powerful engine I'm not asking a lot of it, no towing or massive overloads.
To put it in perspective the work truck I plan on putting in the fleet is a Maverick when I can test drive one. This is cheap enough that I can use it til then and trade it in or keep it. It's not exactly apples to apples obviously but you can see what level of work it's gonna have to do.
