Neighbor has a dead ranger. He managed to kill the autotranny and the truck just sits.. It's in decent shape with a couple of spots on the hood where the paint is peeling.
I would make an offer before the junkyard comes and pulls it away.. but how hard is it to replace the tranny.. and is it possible to replace it with a manual?
Depends on what motor for the ease of removal. But either way, figure at least an afternoon to remove it.
I believe you would need the pedals, PCM, trans harness, trans, and driveshaft to make the swap.
The hard part would be putting the clutch and line in. The tranny should be pretty basic rwd or 4wd. Unbolt the bell housing, slide out the flywheel and it should swap easily unless you need a hole in the floor, which is probably covered by rubber floor. New flywheel and if I'm not mistaken, some mustang transmissions may bolt up depending on the motor. I believe my friend had a T5 in a 3.0? I cant remember.
EDIT: Of corse theres the mounts and supporting it and coolant lines and electrical and all that, but I assume you know that.
I might have to hit up a JY and look at Manual rangers... they just seem rare.
it's also RWD, not a 4x4. Gotta find out what engine is in it

That should be an aluminum hood.
I believe it is.. you can see the aluminum beneath the peeling paint. Maybe if I buy it.. I will strip and polish it

And it will sear your eyeballs like the Hammerhead Eagle i-Thrust. Is that a coil or torsion spring truck? Regardless, it needs a 5.0 & M50D-R2 in it.
I am not sure what is in it now.. I just know it is sitting next to his garage doing nothing. He recently had a ram towed for a similar reason. He does lawn care for a living (as in owns the company) So I imagine the ram led a rough life.. but the ranger has barely moved since he got it.
My bet it is the 3.0L and 4R44E combo. It also has the wishbone front suspension (started in 1998). The 3.0L is a pretty tough little engine. The 4 speed auto... not so much. At least its not the A4LD... That was a TURD.

Same thing. Just has even more electrical bullE36 M3 in the pan and valvebody and a new naming system.

He could matte clear it when done to diminish the brightness slightly. Why a FS truck trans? A T5 is a much better choice.

A 3.2 liter SHO V6 with the 5 speed from a 3.0 vulcan equiped ranger would be a neat swap.
What I can say about the vulcan is it is as exciting as an anvil and TWICE as reliable.

Mine has been dead nuts reliable. My PS pump is shot, but 150K and my exuberant driving style are to blame there.

If not, 302 swap. Five speed for realz.
Back when I was Ranger shopping, I was after the 3.0. Got a 2.9 and was very happy with it. 1992 STX.

Yep, you're correct. My memory of Ford products is becoming fuzzy...

My high school graduation "present" was a 1986 Bronco II with the 2.9L. It was pretty decent except that it leaked oil like a sieve. After many gasket changes, I just gave up. It was easier to pour the oil onto the outside of the engine because that where it all ended up.
I tried to convince my dad that a 302 and M5ODR2 would fix that. He didn't agree
it shouldn't be hard to find a reman slushbox for it, Rock Auto shows a complete unit for ~$1700.00. That would be the quickest way to put it back on the road.
In reply to stanger_missle:
My dad had the same bronco and it had the same problem. I don't understand. I don't think there were any differences in the engines. Mine was wrecked and Just never gave up.
now I need to figure out how much to offer him. I was looking at it today. Passenger side rear of the bed is dented.. driver's side is on flat steelies.. passengerside has alloys.. interior looks good.. if very bland
In reply to N Sperlo:
From The Ranger Station:
"Valve covers have been known to leak. Other than making the engine look nasty and smell nasty, these pose no danger. Some claims have been made of the motor catching fire because so much oil leaked on the exhaust, but this is rare. Replace with Fel Pro "Rubber" or Fel Pro "Blue" and leaks should be taken care of.
Regardless of these problems, many of these engines are still on the road in the US, and when maintained properly, are highly reliable powerplants. Use of synthetic oil and proper cooling system maintenance is essential if owners of early-model 2.9s wish to avoid trouble.
The 2.9L co-existed alongside the 3.0L, the Engine which replaced it, until 1992, when Ford introduced a "More Refined" Ranger. The 2.9L wasn't a refined engine like the 3.0L "Vulcan". It was rough, noisy, and crude. The 3.0L was none of these things so it replaced the 2.9L in 1993. Even with its meager low end torque (compared to the 2.9L) it still is the only Small V6 offered in the Ranger, next to the Big Brother 4.0L. The 4.0L is related to the 2.9L however, so in a way it still lives on. The 3.0L is in NO WAY related to the 2.9L V6 Engine."
