Off to look at a 99 M Coupe for my significantly awesome wife in a few hours. 88K miles. Familiar with needing a new water pump if it can't be proven. Familiar with rear subframe weld tear out issues and I think I know where to look. I'm pretty comfortable with the idea of replacing all of the old worn out stuff that needs to be replaced on a 13 year old car.
Any other advice?
This has been one of my dream cars for the last decade. It would be my wife's car, 3 days a week back and forth to work or so. She works hard and wants something cool to drive again. She says she would let me drive it though. :)
I'm trying not to get too excited. Excitement ruins my impartiality.
Good luck with it, drooled over em myself. :D

mileage says it should be due for full cooling system replacement - radiator, hoses and connectors and motor mounts. Might be a negotiating point.

Can't contribute much, but please keep us updated. I hope hope to be making this same kind of trip in the near future for my significantly awesome other, who also works hard and thinks she deserves a cool car (and I concur!).
Dammit. It was priced like a nice example and photographed like a nice example but was not a nice example. The clear coat on the hood was peeling. There was a dent in the drivers door that was somehow made from the inside. The front bumper had been repainted and not so expertly repaired from curb strikes. I was expecting some sort of undertray/splash guard but none was present. All in all, it was a rougher example from just a basic walk around. We would have had to haggle about 25% off the price before we were even speaking the same language. Not worth spending the time. We probably should have driven it anyway but it was starting to rain.
On the bright side, I'm still in love with Mcoupes. My brain starts thinking very illogically when I get around them. Love them.
That sucks, but waiting for the right car is worth it.

Thats too bad,I too have wasted much time driving to look at "mint" cars only to find they were overpriced junk.
Good luck with the hunt to find a cool wifes car.
