A quarter million miles sounds like so much more then 250,000 mi. I got a call today about a 2001 Audi A6 with the 2.7 twin turbo and a six speed. This is a drivetrain that I truly love. I am trying to convince myself that purchasing this thing with this many miles is a good idea, and will not just be a bomb.
This would be an upgrade of 10 years and 15,000 miles from my 1991 Audi 200 20V with 267,000 mi so I am not new to the high milage game. Does anyone have any idea about the high end longevity of these cars? This one just got a new RS4 clutch, is lowered, and sporting a performance chip. I trust this dealer and he is a great friend, but I would like some input.
Also anyone interested in a 200 priced to sell? Its currently running a fuel cell in the trunk to make up for its rusted gas tank. I love this car but I think it is going to be time for an upgrade soon.
Thanks,
Matt

Does the Pope wear a funny hat? Where are you located and how much is "priced to sell"?
I've had more than a few cars with better than a quarter million on them. But I'd be a little ascared because it's had performance inhancements done. Most folks don't lower a car for the better frontal area, put a chip in it for economy and a nice grabby clutch and reap the benefits of better economy.
could go either way. might need everything, might have already had everything done.
It's probably on it's 3rd pair of turbos, so you should be good for at least another couple years.
If the maintenence hadn't been done on this car, it would have blown up quite some time ago.
This is kindof strange though... i was just searching Ebay for 2.7TT cars, or C4 S4/S6s.

Will your friend put you in touch with the previous owner?
That is where you will get the best input.
does it have a maint history?
Yes, the car has a good history and has been serviced at this dealer for quite some time now, so I know some of its past. It has been to one track day, and I'm sure spirited driving was a common expereince for this car.
The turbos keep coming up, both here and elsewhere. How explosion prone are they? When I started a summer job in a Euro Auto shop my first week was upgrading the turbos in a 2.7 so I already know the pain of removing the entire front end of the car to do this job.

I'm not sure where that comes from, or if and when they're failure-prone. All i know is that most of them that i see on Ebay or else where, if they have over 100k miles, 90% of the time, i will see something like "Turbos just replaced at 112k miles blah blah blah" or something of the sort.
Because of that (they CAN'T be cheap) i would honestly buy one with higher miles that has had that done recently vs one with say, 75k miles w/ original turbos. Or buy one with 75k miles and be ready for a turbo UPGRADE, not replacement.
Wheel bearings and control arms. The like to go through them.
The engine itself will be fine.
I'd wager it would be no more problematic than if you bought one with just 100k on it.
I had two A4's of that body style. I took both to the 200k neighborhood, and ditched them when the turbo showed evidence of death.
It's a turbo, they all experience spectacular death. Easy driving and the stock tune will make them last the longest.
