I bought the Harbour freight 12,000 and I am very happy with it. Didn't even strain to pull a car on the trailer.

Another HF winch owner here. SLOW, compared to a WARN, but way cheaper.

On the winch topic, has anyone tried mounting their winch on a plate that would slide into a 2" receiver hitch? I've considered doing this on my Bronco and adding a receiver to the front bumper as well. The plan would be to add a power plug at either end so wiring would be quick and easy.

I haven't myself but in the early 2000's I remember that being used A LOT by off roaders.
Good idea!
I bought Harbour freight ' s reciever mount for the winch. Bolted a bumper reciever to the trailer and one to the garage floor( it is up hill into the garage). I also bought the radio remote controller. (Worth every penny). I can load onto the trailer by myself and pull dead ones into the garage.

Time to find a Junkyard 4.0L HO and swap internals to get a 4.6 stroker

Its a reman with only a few hours on it (3-4miles?). It took me 3 1/2 years to get it running again. I am not touching that motor at this point unless there is a rod hanging out of it!
If I had a time machine, and knew I was moving/changing jobs/etc, I would have left the blown up 4.2 in it until I could put together a 5.3 LS swap. But that ship had sailed.

interested in this greatly. can you provide more detail? especially on the garage side of things? this would make my life MUCH easier due to the same issues you have (uphill into garage).
thanks michael
I always planned on getting the lockout hub kit for my xj and then welding up the front dif. That plus a locker in an explorer rear axle and I probably would have been done. 2wd for the street and pretty much everything for when I needed it.
Back to the winch, though, you might want to spend a few bucks for an eBay chunk of synthetic rope. I got almost 100' of what they called 3/4" and 20k rated with hook and everything for just over $100 for one of the spools on my tow truck's pto winch. Seems closer to 1/2", but weighs almost nothing and if it pulls what it is rated I don't care.
A couple of us are planning a trip to The Mounds this Saturday if any GRMers in the SE Michigan area are interested.

Just to remind, you can still find factory Dana 44's in XJ Cherokees. Just look for the wood grained Wagoneer edition with the quad headlights. I bought one, put in a mini spool and bolted into my XJ.
