I now have one, and I think I am ok with that.
Meet the newest addition to our house, a 2012 VW Jetta TDI with 50k on the clock. Lowest mileage car I've ever bought (at least for me to drive)

The DSG + diesel was fun this weekend up on the Blue Ridge Parkway

They ARE reliable. Right up until they are not.

Could be said for anything really.
Very cool. I loved the DSG diesel that I test drove. Felt like I was Tom Kristensen at LeMans or something.
Its too bad that they don't have the style of the MK4 GLI models. Those really stood out.
But having an auto daily driver is not a bad thing, I am really getting used to the luxo truck right now!
My 14 Jetta tdi has been trouble free for 34k and haven't even owned it for 10 months.... 3 oil changes, 1 tire, and 1 bent rim. I need a piece of interior trim fixed but I'll let it go to avoid being forced to do the stupid new emissions recall VW just issued. If and when I'll just do a tune and dpf delete.......

Sorry for threadjack. What do you know about the recall? My car is scheduled to go in tomorrow for it.
In reply to CGLockRacer:
Only what has been posted on tdiclub. I think VW is doing something with the regen cycle to avoid dpf failures based on some of my readings. But by doing so, expect a mpg drop. They are more frequent but don't last as long.

...and when you're sick of that, do a dpf delete with a downpipe and a Malone tune, more powah AND more mpg's.
In reply to xflowgolf:
I'm trying really hard to keep this car stock. However, more MPGs is tempting.
And Storz - Nice car! Sorry for threadjacking. I am in a mixed relationship with mine. 125k miles on it and no major issues other than the front wheel bearings needing to be replaced at 90k, and intercooler icing. Right now I'm not sure if I want to sink some $$ into it for timing belt, shocks, potentially clutch, and DPF getting near the end of its service life, or get something different. The high mileage VW repair stuff has me paranoid.
In reply to CGLockRacer:
If it's paid for it's still cheaper to repair for a long time. I was quoted about $600 for a timing belt job at the dealer. Dpf delete is a grand for the part. Tune is 2-400? Shocks/struts should have already been done once and they aren't that bad provided you have a shop for the front struts that will swap them out for you.
My buddy has one of these. I was surprised by how well it handled honestly. Pretty good for an appliance :P
We'd just passed 101K miles on our '09 TDI, DSG, when a stupid woman in a Honda Pilot sideswiped us totaling it. One glow plug, a set of tires, a battery, and a broken door handle in the time we had it, hard to complain too much. Still had the original pads and rotors even, gotta love the compression braking of a diesel. I followed the maintenance schedule (except for the cabin filter) by the letter, Mobil 1 ESP and Mann filters.
We didn't like the Mk6 as much as our Mk5, had a few Mk6 rentals, and even test drove a '15 "refresh," Mk6 sedan, we wound up in a '14 Sportwagen, TDI, DSG, since it was still basically the Mk5. I was hoping the Golf Sportwagen was going to be on the market sooner, but it wasn't and we needed a car.
Our '14 is due for it's first oil change today actually.
I read the most recent recall for emissions reprogramming notice when we got it, and opted not to take it in. I opted not to do the fuel filler retrofit on our previous car too. Only thing the dealer got to do on the old one, besides a couple recalls that were actually constructive, and will get to do on this one is the DSG service every 40K miles.
Congrats on the new ride, and welcome to the TDI family Storz!
I wanted to buy a 09 Sportwagen TDi a couple of years ago, but I didn't make that money then. Soon, I will buy one, no stinkin' DSG though (even if it is fast).

Thanks! This is actually our 2nd one, we had a 2005 Jetta TDI 5spd as well. I had Absolute Automotive in Durham NC do their "Stage 1" tune on the 05 and it would walk away from my wifes 01 VR6 GTI
I do wish the '12 had a little more of that diesel/turbo grumble
