Yea....I've never tried to work a "But, Honey It's Abandon" angle with the wife. I want to see how this goes for future usage. This is BHIA (Beta) testing.

Grab it up and roll it into your yard and cover it with a tarp . . . then wait a month or two.
The city doesn't care, the cops don't care, the DMV could care less, and the neighbors may not even notice that it's gone.
In a couple of months, call your insurance company (NOT the city or cops!) and say that you're looking at a car on eBay and something seems weird about that auction. Give the the year/VIN/etc. info and say that you'll be putting it on the road if you win the auction but if they could take a look at the VIN for you and see if it's been reported stolen anywhere, you'd feel a bit better about bidding for it.
Insurance agents/companies have access to certain levels of the Registry/DMV computers and can check these things. They know you and want your business and can often help with a number of problems. I had my agent chase a VIN for me and found out that it was valid. but the slash had been replaces with a one. All worked out fine.
Once you find out it's status, you can decide if you want to pursue things further.
ALWAYS use the insurance folks over the DMV and cops. They usually just playing Game Boy and waiting to retire. No berkeleying help at all with anything ! ! !
Luck !
