Just tonight, out of the blue while she was driving, both the abs and brake lights came on in the suburban. Absolutely no change in tbe way they feel or seem to function. Any ideas?

i think those years of suv's/truck's had problems with the rust in the hub where the ABS sensor fits causing ABS issues. i know in my buddies 2000 silverado it would get a false ABS reading and would think the front tires would lock which in turn would basically not let any brake pressure be applied, after almost dying by not being able to stop for a stop sign we pulled the ABS relay until he got it fixed
Are ypu saying the gear that it reads rusts? Both front bearings have been replaced as a hub assembly.

What happened was the hub would rust and "rust jack" the sensor away from the reluctor wheel causing false readings. The typical symptom was the abs would activate as you were almost to a complete stop, like the last foot or two. The fix was to remove the sensor, sand away the rust, and reinstall. It usually wouldnt turn on any warning lights. A brake and abs light usually indicate a low fluid problem.
If the original hubs failed and were replaced, it may just need the reluctor cleaned. They get gunked up with grease and metal filings and confuse the sensor.
The bccrake fluid is almost full. No lights on today. Some forums mention that a small ground on the top of the engine may be a problem as well as checking all the electrical connections. Once the rain quits (feel like building an arc) I will check those. Hoping it's nothing expensive.

It's a tabbed ring that looks like a rotor and allows the abs sensor to read wheel speed, I think via magnetism?
