Hey guys,
I had a co-worker asked me about maintenance on his 2004 Acura TL. The car has been barely kept running for the past few years. So far I know it needs front brakes and rotors, possibly timing belt, waterpump, and spark plugs. Guys got 3 young kids and could use a hand. I offered to help, which means this will be my first time working on a Honda/Acura. Somehow I've managed to put it off for this long... Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the FSM?
Also from what I gather the recommended time for the timing belt and waterpump is 105k miles. He's past that. He also keeps saying timing belt, do these have timing belts like the Subaru H4? Or is he referring to the serpentine belt? If it has a timing belt anyone been there done that on a TL? Any complications or issues or things I should watch out for?
Thanks in advance
It is a belt car, they are due at 105. Spark plugs are due at 120 as well as a valve adjust. Service manuals are not cheap, but you can order them through Helminc.com if you need.
IIRC, the only special tool you need is to get the crank pulley off the crank. Everything else is fairly straight forward. There's a single serp belt on it.
19200-RDV-J01 is the water pump, 14400-RCA-A00 is the timing belt and 38920-RCA-A03 is the serp belt.... and I can get it all for you through our site.
EDIT: If you're in there, those timing belt tensioners are notorious for leaking because they're hydraulic but I wouldn't worry about the idler and the pulleys. Those tend to last hundreds of thousands of miles without failing.
Your local library may have an internet service for car repair data. We have Alldata here, and it was a big help when I installed a Subie diff in the racecar.
