I am installing new leaf springs on my 1978 F-150. I have new u bolts and eye bolts. The new springs only differ by having an extra leaf. I have never changed leaf springs. The spring shop showed me which end is the front. I am planning to remove the rust riddled bed and replace it with a flatbed mounted welder. Are there any tips, tricks or traps that I should know about?
Mount the spring in the front first , assemble the shackle and install the spring. Mount the axle.
It might help to get the axle up high and out of the way while installing the springs.
Be sure the center bolt goes in the hole on the axle pads.
Or you could assemble the axle to the springs after mounting the springs in front. Holds everything in place.
Jack everything up, do the shackles.
If the truck has been anywhere in the rust belt. Have sawzall ready with new blade. Buy new new spring eye bolts and nuts before starting the job.
