What I want is meaningful ways to reduce the drag on my Datsun.
We just need to figure out why Manta Rays do this with their cephalic lobes and copy it for the front splitter.

This has been studied. As I understand it, it helps to direct food into thier mouth. I will go out on a limb and surmise it is using the flow turning and food mass to effectively separate more food for a given amount of water.
Mother nature can be counted on to develop the lowest energy method for the job at hand. If you ever want to do something efficiently, look for natural versions of the same effort.
