As much blasphemy that swap would cause in the Ferrari community (well, not really as this model is old and I would bet the community wouldn't want that model anyway)...that is still the only way I could see myself owning one. I can't fathom $10k engine out services, etc. every 5k miles or whatever these things take...even if I had the money.....
308's don't fall into the $10k engine out categories and actually are easier to maintain than a Porsche 928. I put about 3000 miles annually on mine which means tires and cam belts every 5 years. I've already converted it to a crank fire XDi ignition (for the price of a single tune up), so no $400 distributor caps, etc.
Never any other issue to deal with... has been dead reliable. I've been able t do all the maintenance myself... though having more of a back ground in Italian cars would have lessened the learning curve.
A buddy has put 120k on his 308 in the last 4 years... trouble free with just planned maintenance.
Now if my engine ever did give up the ghost, I'd have to seriously consider an LSx... though not with a slushbox...

They've been dropping Chevy engines into Ferrari since at least the early 60's. I think it's pretty cool that someone is taking the next step with an LSx. Of course, I'd love to see an STi engine back there...

A large part of the allure of a Ferrari is the wonderful noises they make. Despite the performance potential of the STI lump the ghastly whumpwhump noises would just ruin it for me.

The project looks cool but they guys seem like a couple goofs.
"Exotic Performance Plus" works on LS series motors in what appears to be mostly domestic vehicles. That's exotic?
The 3.0 Litre Ferrari V8 back in 1982 only produced 205 hp, and the quarter mile times were in the 16 second range. Not fast by any means!
Actually, that's very, very good for 1982 standards guys, it's not a lot now but 205hp from 3.0L is pretty damn good for 1982. My 1981 4.9L only makes 210 WITH a turbocharger and that's still more than the '82 'vette.
And yeah, an automatic transmission when the G8 manual transaxle is available. Cute.
I bet it's going to have a Holley carb too.
It's a cool project but I think it needed a few less beers in the design phase.

Automatic just makes no sense at all to me, either.
i dont like it at all. im down for busa miatas or lsx mgbs or 302 rx7s, but there really is a limit. ferraris are about more than just fast, its about pedigree and history, heart and soul! there would be no choice for me, ferrari engine in the ferrari. sure theyre expensive to maintain, but its not like youre taking a 308 to the $2010 challenge anyway!
I have to agree with Grimmel. I think the LS motor would be a performance improvement but it's a Ferrari. And like everyone except the dorks at exotic auto-box limited or whatever they are called, to torque converter automatic trans in a Ferrari. EVER!

Even thought Ferrari has now abandoned the manual trans, this is a total fail. I don't even want to think about the weight that is going to be added. I am not talking about the engine swap, but when you combine a Ferrari and a Corvette the amount of gold chains the driver would have to wear would make Mr. T gasp.
I love the idea of the swap, but just about any modern engine would be a "performance improvement." My first dyno day with my 92 SE-R (GTi-R swap) and I put down more power than the 308/328 that showed up (250whp). I didn't know the stock numbers for the Ferrari at the time, but it just seemed weird. Thanks to Magnum, I had that car up on a pedestal!

I'm the one that's always bitching about the hate around here for paddle shifted clutch type gearboxes. I'll definitely agree that anything with a torque converter sucks.
The LS3 makes more power than the stock engine, gets better gas mileage, while at the same time requires much less maintenance for WAY less money. Seems like a win/win swap to me. They also make a really nice noise, just not the same Ferrari wail that everyone loves.

I'm with Tuna55 here. Pedigree? History? on a 308? you gotta be kidding... It was there bottom market car-replacing a car that many at the time didnt even consider a Ferrari...the Dino. Is it sexy? Yes. Does it normally make neat noises? Hell yeah, but so do other cars...
Just as a point of reference, debuting in 1988 Ford had a 3.0L DOHC V6 producing 220hp.
I'm for the swap of the engines but not the automatic.
