I'm planning on removing the headlites and ducting the air into the carbs. I want an air filter but don't have a lot of space.
Assume the ducts are 5" is there anything Junkyard or easily fabricated that I can but a common filter in and. Have the outlet be 5-6"?
I need 2, one for each side. I can see a lot of time wasted fabricating something that every junkyard throws away.
Any suggestions?
Picture of where this goes would help some.
Not re air cleaner but . . . On my Fiat 850 I had to duct air to the radiator (in the rear) this is what I started with at the headlights

look at the f150 from the late 90s. Seems like what you want
LS400s use a round airbox, one of those might work for you.
You might check out what Donaldson and other industrial filtration companies have on offer. Plenty of small equipment out there that has little round air cleaners that may work here.

At that price I'll buy one to try it out. Maybe I'll wind up with 4 one for each headlight and each carburator.
Then the turn signal location can become a brake duct. !

That vibrant tubing looks like what I needed but didn't know it was available. I thought I'd have to use flexible aluminum dryer hose. Very nice. Thank you.

Maybe but short of stumbling across one in a junkyard I don't know sizes or anything. I suppose I could go to a local parts store and check it out. What years would have that?
Dont assume that that is the correct price or auction. I was referring to the air cleaner from a mid-late 90s f150 and others as a closed housing that would fill a headlight air clacoop, contain a filter, and provide for ram air ducting.
I THINK it will work, and pretty sure nobody wants them.

Ford Rangers have the same looking housing but possibly / probably smaller. Plenty of them in our local yards

Thanks I'll check them out.

Don't get to carried away. I would use an air box that feeds all the carbs and at max use two of the F150 filter boxes. That Y in to the air box.
Also keep in mind that Air filtration, Filter size, and Air flow are all related and you need to find the balance of the three. Increase filtration and flow decreases so you then increase filter area to make up for it. Many performance air filters are just decreasing the filtration over roughly the same OE area so air flow is increased.
Perhaps you're not familiar with the Jaguar engine compartment. To say things are tight is a major understatement. I have 4 headlights. And 4 carbs, 2 on each side. If I draw off air pressure there that should also reduce drag in a very high pressure area . My original thought was just use some 6" flexible aluminum dryer duct but no sense in ducting in a lot of dirt and dust if I can somehow fit air cleaners.
I have to somehow find a way to lower the carbs an inch. Yet keep the inlet tract reasonably close to straight. There is 40 horsepower available if I can achieve that.
Picture to follow.
While it looks like a fair amount of room that 7 " inches on each side will be taken up by a pair of 6&1/2 long SU carbs. Then to get them to fit under the hood I have to lower the engine by 1 inch.
The option is to put a dog leg in the intake and give up 40 horsepower.

FWIW, the diameter of the Ranger cleaner setup, which looks similar to the F150, is 7.5".

Thanks for that information. I'll go looking.
I would think some sort of filter that could mount on the outside of that headlight mounting (in the "bucket") might be worth a try, the. Run just ducting inside. So a small squarish one would work. Lots of those in the junkyard.
You would need to make some sort of frame/bracket to hold it down on the outside of course.
The f150 ones are huge. Like 10-12 inches in diameter where that clamp holds the 2 halves together.
I thought you had a Ford truck? Just look under the hood to get an idea.
Ford must have changed the air cleaner. My 2016 doesn't look anything like that .

My first thought about your suggestion was it wouldn't work. Then last night trying to get to sleep your idea popped back into my head and I kept trying to dismiss it but it turned into the best idea yet. I have roughly 8" x 15" to slide a filter in behind the grill.
The headlite bezel will hold it in place and I can use foil tape to retain it and seal it off. Instead of adding weight and bulk it will be clean and actually a few ounces lighter than nothing for a filter. ( the weight I cut for the slot to slide it in).
Thanks.
