I blame this thread partially for the deal I struck this morning.
A 72 long nose coup complete but in boxes. No rust but lots of worn paint. Had the PPI done on it this morning and it got the thumbs up. It has been updated a little to look more like a 73 but I am going to put it back to 72 spec. It comes with a fresh 2.7 and trans. Not sure at the moment if I will go webers or EFI. There are reasons for going either way.
I will be documenting the project start to finish and the $$$.

How much "worse" are early 70's cars? Work colleague has a 72 targa with a retrofitted 3.2 and very tastefully flared rear fenders that's he's loosely interested in passing on. Similar to David- my wall had an early 80's targa poster... I know they are somewhat unloved (or were, in a past tense) but I think they look cool as hell. Pre-75 works for me as well to avoid the annual smog testing in CA.
I have very much warmed up to Targas. Once you lower them a bit, they look way cool.
What induction does that car have? Is it 3.2L Carrera all the way through?
He says it's motronic. He's not the biggest "car guy" but he said yes when I asked that question.
The only thing I am not sure of is what to do with the paint. Keep the patina or repaint. I will have to make this choice quick as the car is mostly apart so now is the time. I also need to check and see what the original color is. The owner said it was repainted in the early 80s (by his father). I need to verify the color. Currently it is a dark turquoise green blue. I am just not sure if that is corect for a 72. I hope it is as I like it.
EDIT: I don't think the color is from the base color options. I have a color list including the special order colors but there are no samples so I need to see those.
I will see about getting a photo.

There should be a paint code on the sticker inside the trunk lid. It’s listed with all of the options. (At least, later cars like mine have that info.)

Congratulations! Excited to see photos! And, at least based on your description, the paint color sounds great!

Looking at a possible "driver spec" 993 for sale. Its got 135k miles and a small rust spot on the windshield area (common problem apparently). What does everyone think? Getting details as we speak but the price isn't bad and I'm just wondering if I should care about the mileage.
135k isn't much. Maintenance history is much more important. There's a lot of interwebs silliness about rebuilding 993 heads at 100k for secondary air injection CEL issues that are only secondarily related to valve guide wear. Other than that the drivetrain is pretty bulletproof. The other systems are no worse than other 30-year old German cars (and better than, say, the dissolving-wire-insulation Benzes).
The small rust spot at the bottom the windshield is common but not good. $50 says it's actually a much larger spot than you can see, under the trim and down into the windshield channel. Definitely fixable but like most bodywork not inexpensive.
A prepurchase inspection by a 993-savvy mechanic is 100.0% required IMO.

I inquired more and it turned out to be a basket case. The search may or may not continue....

FWIW, there are more fish out in that sea.
