I was out doing some minor welding on the floor of the MGB today when I saw an old Type 1 VW go by. Then a split window Kombi. Then Kombi pickup. Then a KG. Plus two Porsche Speedsters. What's going on?
I check the interweb, and sure enough, there's an air-cooled VW show about 1/2 mile from my house (Central Jersey Volkswagen Society ).
So off I go to see what it's all about. Wish I had more time. Very nice show with some Porsches, Corvairs and even two CItroens (Ami 6 and a 2CV). The two Speedsters were real but there was also a replica plus a 550. Even a Metropolitan with a VW drivetrain (!).

Here's some samples.
Oh good, I was afraid you'd found the motherlode of abandoned AC VWs.
Do you have any more pictures of the rusty 181? Just wondering if there was a coffee can nearby that said "PLZ DONATE - CAN'T AFFORD PAINT "
Man, those guys get PISSED OFF when you do that to them...
Yeah if that were mine, I'd buy brush and a quart of Rustoleum.
I imagine that "look" floats his boat. To each, his own.
I didn't take a lot of shots of the really ratty VWs....and there were lots (for some reason, some of the Kombis were truly crusty). That second bus above had rust-through holes in the roof.
I will say that I think a lot of the "patina" was real (as opposed to the fake patina we see at some shows)
The Type 3s (Squareback, Fastback and Notchback) were my favourites.....especially the Notchbacks.
Here's a few more:
I haven't seen a split window in a long time. Guy at a bodyshop near me has a clean oval window.
Saw a beautiful square back at the fabric store today. I think I might need to own something air cooled eventually.

Build your own!
(this was for sale there)
Aero you are a sick man and I should have 86'd you from my thoughts! Thanks alot, I know where there is a 69 bug sitting. I wish the mercedes groups were half as cool as the VW groups with support.

What dash is that in?
According to the Central Jersey VW Society website, that's Bob Cropsey's 1950 VW Type 1
I'm not sure if that "Volkswagen" script is correct.......I've never seen that before, but then, I haven't seen many '50 VWs.
There's a bunch of stuff about the car at:
