Thanks to Knurled, I'm leaving Boston tomorrow morning for Cleveland to pick up my new-to-me short-list car, an '03 540i 6-speed-

Paperwork is all done, flight is booked, and in true Golfduke fashion, am expecting to drive it back to NH with an impending Noreaster slowly coming on my heels.  Was kinda hoping my first snow drive would be on snow tires, but where's the fun in that???

Long term goals for this car are simple-  Enjoy toting a couple kids and a wife around, with haste and carnal exhaust noises.  Maybe even an occasional autocross.  Other than that, keep it nice, have fun with it, and resist the urge to track it, haha.

More pics as my journey starts!

check Cleveland CL for cheap BMW 17" rims with decent all-seasons or dedicated winters?  IDK what's on that car or what you may have in the garage at home, so feel free to disregard this advice.

I have a set of DS2s and blizzaks in my garage, just need to get the car to them, haha.

...But thank you for the advice!  It would definitely have been plan A had Plan B not happened before it.

Which route will you be taking?

Most likely Northernmost.  Most boring, but also the longest amount of time away from the storm.

Front tires have 8/32 of tread, left rear has 6/32 and right rear has 4/32.

Also the least painful toll-wise, I assume. I loathe having to drive through PA via I-76 or I-80.  Twenty bucks in gas and forty bucks in tolls.

We're closed on weekends, but I'll be here on Saturday working on a friend's Jetta.  He lives a few hours away, but he bought it from someone he knows on the east side of Cleveland and it needs new wheel bearings and a water pump before it can be driven.  A friend of his is driving him up here and he's driving it home after we make it roadworthy.

I dunno, NY gets you pretty good, it's just all in one big sum once you get off the thruway, haha.

In reply to golfduke :

I'd be okay with that.  PA has you stop every few miles and give them fifty cents, or ten bucks to get on no matter if you are going one exit or halfway across the state...

Well that's not a 245 like he was talking about.

Have fun! Learning a car at speed is the best way to learn a car.

Very nice. That's a pretty good looking car. Are the lights real Euro Hellas or knockoffs? I was never happy with the light output on my knockoffs and eventually ponied up for the real thing. I also see a higher percentage of absolutely dark back roads than most.

The adventure quotient on fly and drives definitely ramps up in the winter!

Memories of picking up teh S60R after being dropped off by a friend who picked me up after my S40 exploded on the way to meeting up with a different friend... and getting there way late, so I got to drive 8 hours home in a mid November slushfest, at night, in a car larger than anything I'd owned since 1998, with unfamiliar controls, in high speed bumper to bumper Michigan traffic.

Cripes that was 38,000 miles ago.  Feels weird to be on the other side of the equation.

DS2 probably won’t bolt on to E39.  Pilot hole won’t fit E39 hub.

The decision to pick up SanFord in Wisconsin in January, caused me some sleepless nights.

Good Morning!  It's a beautiful morning in Boston.  Slept like garbage and definitely rocking a serious head cold.

Here's to a boring flight and a fun ride home. Weather Schmeather, you're from the northeast a little snow and rain nevers slows us down! Good luck, looking forward to seeing the reports, stay safe and enjoy your new ride, it looks sweet.

Good luck and Godspeed.  I'm just northeast of Rochester if you need any assistance as you get into Western NY.

The Jetta mission bailed but I'll still be hanging around at the shop because this has me excited too.

Why you online?  You got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

I'm in Rochester as well.  Golfduke, check to make sure the aux fan up front works if you can.  If it doesn't, send me a message before you come through this area, I've got a very lightly used spare sitting in the garage that I'd let go cheaply.
