If the field and sensor wires are reversed on an alternator will it cause any damage? I can't see a major issue except that it'll drain the battery. Is there a quick way of telling the two apart? There are no markings on the alternator and we're not sure what it's from.
Can you post a pic of the alternator?
If you get them crossed up I think it will still work, just drain the battery. Sense runs to the battery to work the regulator, field runs to the key on power with the trouble lamp spliced in that line.
You should be able to identify them easily, when sense is lifted the voltage shoots up to 17+volts, when field is lifted it will drop to 0 volts.
