Who wants to ask "AMC Gremlin vs Mazda Miata"?

Pinto. Wa s my first race car back when I was 16, and loved it. They didn't catch fire and explode any more than any other car of ther era, and they were much lower and lighter than the Gremmie. Yeah, I like the AMC, but I'm an ardent Pinto fan.

If gas was still $0.32 a gallon, and these cars were nearly new....nope, still the Pinto. But I'm prejudiced, I owned a '76 Pinto that I bought new. It was an MPG hatchback model (the '70s "answer" to the current crop of "ECO" models) but between the automatic (bought with the idea that the Pinto would one day be powered by a 302) and really ridiculous gearing...that car NEVER, EVER got better than 23 mpg. It was replaced by a Chevy Nova that also got 23 mpg.

THE ONLY thing a Gremlin has going for it is the standard 6 cylinder/available from the factory V8, but the build quality LOOKED borderline, if it really wasn't.

And in case I missed it, Pinto vs Vega? Pinto by a mile.

Pinto, no competition. The Pinto actually wasn't a bad car. It was cheap, but that was the whole point. Unlike say a Vega, you could get a standard Pinto to drive pretty well...Vegas...they weren't in the same league.

The only Gremlins I've ever been in were flimsy and junky to be honest. They looked ok in the early v8 form, but that was not a high point in time for American Motors in terms of build quality.

Maybe it should be Ford Pinto wagon vs. AMC Gremlin? The two can (kinda) favor each other.

Pinto Pangra........ done

MustangII.org The PANGRA was a dealer built Pinto sportscar created and marketed by Huntington Ford in Arcadia, CA. Dealer prepared cars were stock 1973 Pintos with modifications that included a fiberglass slantnose front end that was lower and 10" longer then a stock Pinto. The front end also featured pop-up headlights. The interior included Recaro bucket seats, wood steering wheel, and a custom center console with full gauges and a digital tach. A full "Can Am" suspension was added which lowered the car 3" and included Koni shocks, and front and rear sway bars. The real difference came under the hood with an AK Miller turbo charger and performance exhaust. The Pangra was also available in kit form and ledgend has it that even a few Pangra wagons were built by Pinto owners. Less then 200 original dealer prepared Pangras built.

That was the cover of the Racer Walsh catalog.

And I gotta go Pinto, I owned a couple and they were pretty decent cars (always considering the context). A nasty quick Pinto is only a Turbo Bird swap away and a LOT of suspension/brake stuff from the 1980's Mustang GT is a bolt on.

SWMBO also votes Pinto, but it took some convincing. I was scared for our future together.
