Figure 8 bus racing is great fun to watch, however, also one of the white trashiest events you can attend. Watch lots of PBS before and after. That looks kinda tame from what I remember, school buses getting all crossed up to a point they were really tearing up the infield, they ran until all the buses stopped moving(some of them would limp back into the pits and then go back out once patched up) or rolled over. If you signed a truckload of consent forms, you could ride the bus during the actual race.

I've competed in 4 schoolbus figure 8 races as part of the illustrious Crash-A-Rama festivities. It was ridiculous fun--- even when I was hit, rolled and caught fire! Fortunately they put out the blaze so quickly I didn't even know it was on fire. (besides all the yelling)

Consent forms? Nah---- just a standard waiver to enter the pits. To race it cost me a grand total of $20--- same as it would have cost to spectate. As it turns out, there isn't an overabundance of folks with as little judgement as me--- and they are usually eager to get more folks into the race. The first few times I did it I got a free ride by helping to fix a few of the buses they had behind the stadium. "you get one running, you can race it". After that they just knew me, and hooked me up--- although I still did wrench a bit.

Tech? Yeah.....not really. Every autocross I've been to had a MUCH stricter tech standard than this. Basically they wave at you as you enter the track--- that's it. No seatbelt check, no helmet check, no.....well nothing!

The driver's meeting was.......ah......interesting. Let's just say that I'm pretty sure I was the only competitor with a full head of teeth---- and I'm almost positive I was the only competitor with a college degree. Interesting folks, who take it pretty darn seriously. For a few of these guys, you can tell it's their 15 minutes of fame---- to race a bus in front of 4K people or so.

I have to admit--- I update my will before each race--- just in case!

My last race I finished 2nd out of 23. Big Ernie beat me, but he's kind of a legend, and has a hotrod bus. Ain't no one beating Big Ernie!

The trailer races are absolute madness. While I have no problems racing the bus--- I'm not brave or stupid enough to enter the trailer race. So much shrapnel. You could be impaled by another trailer, a car, or a kitchen fork that someone didn't empty out of their trailer. I've seen toilets on the track during this race-----no such thing as a black flag. It's absolute mayhem--- and crazier than the bus races by far!
