Need suggestion for an antenna for my fiberglass boat. Standard type antenna gets no reception, even though it was labeled marine use. Do I need an amp or powered unit?

If you are not getting anything, an amp or powered antenna probably won't help. Most antennas need some type of ground plane to work. If the antenna is the type that mounts thru a hole in the boat, try putting a 1' square of aluminum foil under the antenna so that it makes contact with the base.

Same suggestion as Hal above. Most carbon fiber race cars require similar ground planes under the antennae, although some have copper screen bonded into the body for this purpose.

Wonder is this is the reason why the reception in my fiberglass bodied kelmark Is so poor... going to give the ground plane a try.

Thanks

Edit: it worked. Used 1/3 of an old lic plate, ran a gnd wire. Went from 3 cleat stations and 7 full of static stations to about 10 clear And another 10 that were reasonable.
