Two goofy things I need to fix on Tom Celica, neither of which will make it even a little bit faster... I hate those projects.

Sometimes when I first start the car on a cold, autocross morning, the starter sticks in "start". I know the switch isn't sticking, I checked it. I assumed it was the starter, but here's the weird part- when I fixed the batter cable terminal, it got better. Doesn't do it all the time anymore, just sometimes. So, maybe the cable? Or is the solenoid in the starter messed up?

Other one, and I think this is easy. Again, on cold mornings, there's no power steering until it warms up a bit. If I cycle it lock to lock a few times after it's been running for a few minutes it usually clears up. When I got the car I put a rebuilt pump on it thinking that was the problem. I also flushed the P/S reservoir since it was full of gunk. Seeing the state of the fluid, a bit after I did the pump, I dumped a good bit of fluid out and replaced it thinking maybe things were just really dirty in there, but it's still doing it. You think I need to just keep flushing the system, or do I need a new rack? Only reason I think the rack may be fine is, once it starts working, it does great. Even autocrossing, it keeps up just fine. Just sucks when it's cold.

Thanks for any advice,

Ed

What are you using for power steering fluid? How cold is cold?

I'm just using more fluid - it takes ATF. Cold is, like, anything below maybe 40 or 45.

Sounds like "morning sickness" a lot of GM racks had in the 80's, I believe it was an internal leakage issue, and better seals fixed the problem.

I'd suspect the rack. No idea on the starter, would try another known good unit if they're cheap.

I got a good starter and figure I'll throw it on. Just waiting for the dang snow to melt so I can get it to the shop.

Racks aren't super expensive either. Just didn't want to drop the money on it without being pretty sure that's the problem.

Try a good high mileage ATF, like Valvoline maxlife.
