Another BABE car nears completion

We took the obligatory one lap of the neighborhood yesterday. In keeping with our rally tradition no car gets more than one successful lap of the neighborhood. If it makes it around the block its ready to go, none of this namby pamby test driving and working the bugs out.

The old girl actually has a bit of oomph to her and the drum brakes work reasonably well.

Still some decorating to do and I need to get new tires (anyone have some cheap used 225/75/15s? or 235s?), but generally all the "heavy lifting" is done now.

The steelies arent stayin, they are just rolling stock while I look for tires for the "other" wheels.

Advertised price was $700 but when we got it to start (barely) and the owner admitted to what he thought was a rod knock he quickly and happily accepted $500. The "rod knock" was a cracked exhaust manifold, easy fix ;) However it is severely rotted, we had to weld new metal into the floors and fiberglass large portions of the trunk to keep the luggage from falling out. The top is missing and the carb was a mess. The master cylinder was shot and a few wheel cylinders needed rebuilding too. It had also sat outside for a few years without a top so all interior materials are trashed.

Still it's a cool beater cruiser and I may keep it around just for fun after the rally.

Yes it was bumped to $500 in 2009 to make it easier on some new teams and to test a theory with the true crazies. The theory is that by increasing the price the quality of vehicle will actually DROP. So far this has proven to be true. $250 would limit you to crappy boring cars. $500 opens the doors to REALLY CRAPPY interesting cars.
