Opinions on an under 10 pound flywheel vs the one around 13 pounds for a daily driven NB? I'm. Looking at the offerings from Flyin Miata and I've always wanted the upsides of a race weight flywheel but I'm terrified of chatter and the regular stop and go traffic woes.  Montgomery is not a big city but I do drive to Birmingham occasionally. The other question is: can good cents cause problems if you don't have a garage or carport or drive regularly in the rain?

Oh, and does everyone like the Mazdaspeed mounts for a stock power car?

I run the 10lb flywheel on the street, both when I had the 92whp 1.6L and the current 245whp blown 1.8L, and I daily drive the car. It takes a slight bit more throttle to get moving but nothing unreasonable

Huh?

+1 on the 10lb flywheel working great on the street.

If you're talking about the Mazda Competition motor mounts, I've been happy with them.

I suspect he’s asking about hood vents, but was placed in autocorrect purgatory.

Depending on where the vents are and how they are configured, you’ll likely be ok when parked.  If the water has somewhere to go, then even better.

If you’re on the move, they won’t cause anymore issues than driving through good sized puddles might.

If you’re concerned, you could cut some magnetic material to cover them when you’re parked.

I've got the mounts on mine that I used to daily. You get a bit more buzz through the chassis, but nothing hateful. You may not notice too much if you have a louder exhaust on it.

Ahh, that makes sense.  I figured it was autocorrect, but couldn't quite decipher it.

I have the Singular vents on the track car, but it doesn't get driven in the rain.  I think you'd be OK with them, dependent on where you have your air filter if it's open element.  What would worry me most is getting water in the cam cover valley, but that really isn't a problem with the Singular vent placement.

As long as the vents aren't dumping water directly onto something that doesn't work properly when it gets wet from above, they won't cause any issues.

I've had a 9.5 lb aluminum flywheel in my Miata for 15 years now.  It's not particularly fun in heavy stop-and-go traffic (although realistically that's true of any manual clutch), but for normal street driving it's fine.  You do get a little bit of noise from it when the car is idling.

Mazdaspeed motor mounts the effect is kinda subtle by themselves, you can put them in and not really notice much.  But then you do the diff mounts too, and then you do the suspension bushings, and then you ride in a stock car and notice a huge difference in NVH.  They're all additive.

I haven't found a need for hood vents.  I like to keep a low-key external appearance, and since my car will happily do 95F+ track days while making 300+ rwhp I decided to just skip them.

Lol, sorry, yes, hood vents.  Last question, other than the flywheel and maybe exhaust, anything else yall would do on clutch replacement weekend?

Thanks for the responses all

Clutch master and slave, and the SS line.

Supermiata sells the whole kit and it's pretty cheap:  SPM clutch hydraulic kit

70 bucks sounds like a great idea

This and the rear main seal as well.

And just take a look under the car, and clean it. Keeping everything clean is something that isn't mentioned a lot.

In reference to the magnetic covers for the hood vents, do they make magnets that stick to aluminum now?

Depends on what the screw heads are made of that you use to fasten the vents to the hood and what material the vents are made of.

Also, for parking, even if the material you're putting them on isn't magnetic, the added weight of the magnetic material can help hold them in place.

This is all assuming he still has the original aluminum hood and whether he's actually going to cut it up or use a different solution.

Yes, my magnetic light fell on my head when I absentmindedly pressed it to the hood and let go.  After hearing codrus say he hasn't needed them I may wait until I have a problem or a garage.  Turbo will happen soon enough but I'm trying to take car of all the "supporting mods" one at a time so I'm not down as long when I do it.  Megasquirt, exhaust, cooling system, injectors, wideband, etc can be done here and there.  If I have time when I do the clutch I may pull the engine and trans together and put the oil return bung in the oil pan now.
